John Brennan Named New EuropaBio Secretary General

EuropaBio has announced John Brennan as its new Secretary General as of Monday 19th June.

“We are delighted to have John on board and confident that EuropaBio and the European biotech industry as a whole will greatly benefit from his record of accomplishment, expertise and leadership in the life sciences industry,” EuropaBio Chairman Carlo Incerti said.

Commenting on his appointment, Brennan added: “To me it is very clear that the role and impact of biotechnology in today’s and future society will continue to grow. Therefore, it is of great importance to continue an open, fair and constructive dialogue with all players involved to make sure that society, including the biotech industry, thrives in a way that benefits all. It will be a real privilege to join EuropaBio’s members and team in working together to contribute to a thriving Europe and its biotech industry”.

Since 2008, Brennan has been with the medical technology trade association, MedTech Europe, where, as Director Regulations and Industrial Policy, he developed and implemented regulatory and industrial policy and advocacy strategy. Before that he spent four years at the European Commission working in the Unit responsible for the European Cosmetics and Medical devices legislation. During his time at the Commission he also had particular experience in international regulatory cooperation. Brennan has over 25 years’ experience both on the regulator and the industrial sides of the healthcare industry.

Prior to coming to Brussels, Brennan worked in the Irish National Standards Authority, NSAI, (9 years). Here his responsibilities included managing NSAI’s ‘Notified Body’ activities gaining him extensive European and international experience in the design and quality systems approval of high-risk medical devices and standards development. He began his career in the industry with six years’ experience spanning the in vitro diagnostic, pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Brennan is a science graduate from Dublin, Ireland, with added post-graduate studies in quality control and environmental engineering.
