Clarification: Status Of Endosulfan

An posted on March 28 by FCI contained information from a secondary source on the matter, which had misinterpreted the status of the chemical.

In a letter addressed to FCI, the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) clarified the situation: "The Chemical Review Committee (CRC) of the Rotterdam Convention that met in Rome (20th – 23rd Mar’07) procedurally decided to recommend inclusion of endosulfan in the PIC list."

The letter continued, "CRC is a subsidiary body established by the Conference Of Parties (COP). It is the prerogative of the COP, which is the governing plenary body of the Convention, to finally decide whether or not to add the recommended chemical to the PIC list."

"It must be mentioned that not all chemicals recommended by CRC make it to the PIC list. For example, COP had earlier rejected CRC’s recommendation to add Chrysotile Asbestos to the PIC list."

The next meeting of the COP, when a decision on endosulfan may be made, is scheduled for late 2008.
