Nearly 30,000 Companies Fined in Chinese Environmental Inspections

China will begin reviewing results of the country’s first round of environmental inspections, as a second round of inspections is set to soon begin, market intelligence firm CCM reported.

According to CCM, on May 25, 2018, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China said that six inspection teams have been assigned to different regions in China and will stay at the target places for a month, delivering results of the new strict measurements.

This review will put more pressure on local governments to fulfill their environmental protection responsibilities and make environmental inspections regular. Companies should expect  continuously strict environmental policies and production slowdowns, CCM said.

Second Round of Inspections to Begin

On the same day, the Ministry also unveiled its plan for the second round of national environmental inspections, which will be performed in some central departments and state-owned companies. “Both unannounced visits without advanced notice and targeted inspections will be employed to check for severe problems in key sections,” CCM said.

The second round of environmental inspections is scheduled to start in 2018 and will be completed in three years. In 2017, 31 provinces were covered, and almost 30,000 companies were punished during the inspections for violations of environmental protection. According to CCM, fines totaled $224.60 million. Over 18,000 individuals were fined.
