2017 PMFAI ICSCE Event ReviewThe 12th International Crop Science Conference & Exhibition (ICSCE) organized by the Pesticides Manufacturers & Formulators Association of India (PMFAI) took place in Jaipur 9-10 November 2017. AgriBusiness Global served as the official media sponsor of the event. The event was inaugurated by Pradip Dave, President, PMFAI.

ICSCE is the international platform for pesticide companies to develop strategic and sourcing relationships with international pesticide companies and to learn the current trends in market of generic and off-patent pesticides. PMFAI organizes ICSCE annually to improve the health of the generic and off-patent pesticides industry and to bring researchers in the field of agriculture, pesticide manufactures, agrochemical traders, and allied industry members under one roof. The event provides the opportunity for business expansion by way of joint ventures, bilateral trade, sub-contracting/contract manufacturing, and distribution and networking opportunities for buyers and sellers.

The Indian agrochemical industry has generated a value of about $4.5 billion during 2015‐16, and it is expected to grow 7.5% annually. Approximately 55% is consumed by the domestic market and 45% comes from exports. In the coming years the export is likely to grow 9% to 10% per year while the domestic market is expected to grow 7%.

Furthermore, with national changes in policy such as the Make in India regulation making headlines recently, and sourcing becoming difficult from China in recent months, attendance to the event was up with unification of the market becoming a key focus.

More than 550 registered delegates from the industry participated in the event. The visitors to the 55 booth exhibition included people from a variety of countries including: Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethopia, Europe, France, Georgia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Palestine, Paraguay, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, Uganda, UK, Uruguay, U.S., and Venezuela.2017 PMFAI ICSCE Event Review

The event was also hosted renowned pesticide scientists and industry experts. These experts gave presentations on various topics. One session, the importance of adjuvants in formulation manufacturing and the solutions offered by Croda, was presented by Dr. Hrushikesh Mirgal, R&T Manager, Asia Pacific, Croda India. An overview of the registration procedure in India was provided by Dr. Sandeep Panwar, CEO, Farinsys Agro.

Dr. Bob Fairclough, Kleffmann Group organized a workshop on the current market situation and future prospects for the global agrochemical market with a special emphasis on India’s contribution to the generic market and future opportunities for generics due to mergers and acquisition around the world. The impact of M&A and new technology in the South East Asian pesticide market was discussed by Vaishali Chopra, Analyst, Robo Bank.

Farming operations are very important to achieve optimum efficacy in field. A presentation on spray droplet management was given by representative of Lamberti Spa highlighting various methods and Lamberti offerings by which pesticide manufacturers make their products more adaptable to the different methods of cultivations and climate preserving scale economy in production.

New approaches to agrochemical formulations and biopesticides are strong industry drivers. The introduction of more environment friendly solvents and adoption of biopesticides are creating new challenges to pesticide manufacturers. Dr. Jim Bullock, iFormulate Ltd reviewed these aspects in his presentation. An account of various eco-friendly formulation solvents developed by Solvey Asia Pacific was also given by representative of Solvey.

Counterfeit pesticides are growing at the annual rate of 20% and now constitutes approximately 30% of total crop protection market. This increase is affecting the health of Indian farming communities. C.S. Jeena from Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA) highlighted the ways the Indian pesticide industry can tackle this counterfeit menace to protect the farmers and country.

2017 PMFAI ICSCE Event ReviewWorkshops organized during the event on both the days of the event has helped participants gaining knowledge on the global agrochemicals market and new developments in agrochemical formulations.

Digital solutions are gaining popularity in Indian agriculture thanks to the Digital India initiative, launched by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1, 2015. To promote the safe use of pesticides through digital literacy, PMFAI also launched “Pesticide Spraying Trainer” — an android based mobile app in association with FARINSYS AGRO during inauguration of the ICSCE event. This app helps Indian farming communities to learn safe and judicious use of pesticides by following good spraying practices. “Pesticide Spraying Trainer” also has a quick reference guide on antidotes.

PMFAI is also introducing Global Awards in 10 key categories for agrochemicals from 2018. Details of the award program will be released very soon.
