Syngenta<\/a> ha recibido el 2008 Premio Mundial de Negocios y Desarrollo<\/a> (WBDA) para el desarrollo y la introducci\u00f3n exitosa de una nueva remolacha azucarera que se puede cultivar en condiciones clim\u00e1ticas tropicales y brinda ventajas significativas para los agricultores, el medio ambiente, las industrias del az\u00facar y el etanol y la econom\u00eda, anunci\u00f3 un comunicado de prensa de la compa\u00f1\u00eda.<\/p>\n

La WBDA, presentada por el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo, la C\u00e1mara de Comercio Internacional y el Foro de L\u00edderes Empresariales Internacionales, reconoce la contribuci\u00f3n del sector privado para ayudar a lograr los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio de las Naciones Unidas. El premio reconoci\u00f3 a la remolacha azucarera tropical de Syngenta como "un ejemplo de innovaci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gica que ayuda a aumentar la productividad agr\u00edcola sostenible para satisfacer la creciente demanda mundial de alimentos, piensos y combustibles".<\/p>\n

La remolacha azucarera tropical, que requiere mucha menos agua que la ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar, se puede cultivar en \u00e1reas relativamente secas. Las remolachas tambi\u00e9n crecen m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido, lo que permite a los agricultores cultivar una segunda cosecha en su tierra en el mismo per\u00edodo que los cultivos de ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar tardan en madurar, lo que aumenta la productividad y los ingresos de los agricultores y brinda beneficios significativos al sector agr\u00edcola de los mercados en desarrollo. La remolacha azucarera tropical ofrece rendimientos de producci\u00f3n similares a la ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar y se puede utilizar tanto para procesar az\u00facar para la alimentaci\u00f3n como para convertirlo en bioetanol.<\/p>\n

En 2007, la remolacha, que Syngenta tard\u00f3 11 a\u00f1os en desarrollarse, se introdujo con \u00e9xito en India, donde Syngenta ayud\u00f3 a una cooperaci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de 12.000 peque\u00f1os agricultores en el estado de Maharashtra para construir y operar una planta de producci\u00f3n de bioetanol que funciona en Remolacha tropical Syngenta. En Colombia, se inici\u00f3 la construcci\u00f3n de dos plantas de remolacha a etanol; se espera que comiencen a procesar remolacha azucarera tropical en 2009.<\/p>\n

Actualmente, Syngenta est\u00e1 realizando ensayos de adaptaci\u00f3n en otras regiones tropicales como China, Australia, Tailandia, Vietnam, Kenia, Sud\u00e1frica, Etiop\u00eda, Brasil, Per\u00fa, M\u00e9xico y Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n
