UU. Servicio de Investigaci\u00f3n Agr\u00edcola (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/\">ARS<\/a>). Cient\u00edficos de ARS y la Universidad de Florida (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufl.edu\/\">UF<\/a>) est\u00e1n explotando esa dependencia para camuflar b\u00e1sicamente las plantas de tomate. En las pruebas de campo, las plantas se rociaron con caol\u00edn, un tipo de arcilla en polvo, y uno de los tres aceites esenciales de plantas que, en conjunto, redujeron la incidencia de TSW en 50%.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan Stuart Reitz, un entom\u00f3logo del sitio de Tallahassee, Florida, EE. UU. De la Unidad de Investigaci\u00f3n de Comportamiento y Biocontrol de Insectos del ARS, el caol\u00edn forma una bata blanca que puede interferir con la capacidad de los trips para concentrarse en las se\u00f1ales de color durante el vuelo. Los trips que aterrizan en las plantas tratadas pueden tener dificultades para penetrar la capa de caol\u00edn, lo que puede disminuir la transmisi\u00f3n del virus TSW presente en la saliva de los insectos. Usado solo, el caol\u00edn disminuy\u00f3 la TSW en parcelas experimentales de tomate en 33%. Combinarlo con aceite de \u00e1rbol de t\u00e9, aceite de limoncillo o geraniol redujo a\u00fan m\u00e1s la enfermedad en 17%, informa Reitz.<\/p>\n<p>Los brotes severos de trips y TSW pueden causar p\u00e9rdidas de rendimiento de 100%. Una vez infectadas, las plantas no se pueden curar.
