Existe una fuerte demanda entre los productores de biotecnolog\u00eda para abordar muchos problemas agr\u00edcolas en Polonia, uno de los seis pa\u00edses de la UE que todav\u00eda tiene prohibiciones nacionales sobre organismos gen\u00e9ticamente modificados (GM), donde la venta, el registro y el uso de semillas GM son ilegales, informa Servicio de Agricultura Extranjera del Departamento de Agricultura de EE. UU. <\/a>(USDA-FAS).<\/p>\n

Polonia planea actualmente instituir una prohibici\u00f3n de los alimentos transg\u00e9nicos, que entrar\u00e1 en vigor en diciembre de 2012. Sin embargo, el plan podr\u00eda descartarse si contin\u00faa la presi\u00f3n actual sobre el gobierno por parte de asociaciones industriales, cient\u00edficos y productores para permitir los alimentos transg\u00e9nicos. Al argumentar para cancelar la prohibici\u00f3n, los productores citan el constante aumento del costo de los insumos agr\u00edcolas, especialmente los fertilizantes, cuyo uso aument\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 20% entre 2004\/05 y 2005\/06. Adem\u00e1s, el uso de pesticidas por hect\u00e1rea se ha duplicado desde 2000. Estos precios m\u00e1s altos se transmiten de los productores a los molineros y, finalmente, a los consumidores. Las variedades transg\u00e9nicas requieren menos insumos y podr\u00edan reducir los costos generales de los agricultores, lo que resultar\u00eda en menores precios de producci\u00f3n y consumo de alimentos.<\/p>\n

A pesar del estado oficial de Polonia "Libre de transg\u00e9nicos", el cultivo de semillas transg\u00e9nicas todav\u00eda es posible a trav\u00e9s de un fallo legislativo. Sin embargo, el gobierno planea actualizar pronto su ley de cultivo para garantizar que no se plantar\u00e1n.
