El hongo P. pachyrhizi causa p\u00e9rdidas sustanciales a la soja en todo el mundo.<\/p>\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos identifican la funci\u00f3n de un gen deshabilitando ese gen en plantas u otros organismos, desafiando al organismo de alguna manera, como con la exposici\u00f3n a un pat\u00f3geno, y observando las consecuencias que resultan de tener ese gen deshabilitado. En estudios realizados por el bi\u00f3logo molecular Kerry Pedley, en la Unidad de Investigaci\u00f3n Cient\u00edfica de Enfermedades Extranjeras-Weed del ARS en Fort Detrick, Maryland, las plantas silenciadas con genes ser\u00e1n inoculadas con esporas de P. pachyrhizi y monitoreadas para detectar una ruptura de la resistencia. Pedley ha recibido el premio TW Edminster de la agencia, que lleva el nombre de un ex administrador de ARS, m\u00e1s $120,000 para financiar un puesto de asociado postdoctoral durante dos a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>El objetivo de la investigaci\u00f3n de Pedley es agilizar el desarrollo de nuevos cultivares de soja que puedan soportar P. pachyrhizi.
