UU. - Con el apoyo de un premio $1.45 millones de BREAD (Investigaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica para posibilitar el desarrollo agr\u00edcola<\/a>) programa patrocinado por el Fundaci\u00f3n Nacional de Ciencia<\/a> y el Fundaci\u00f3n Bill y Melinda Gates<\/a>, a nueva colaboraci\u00f3n de investigaci\u00f3n<\/a> se centrar\u00e1 en la protecci\u00f3n de cultivos importantes en los pa\u00edses en desarrollo, anunci\u00f3 un Instituto de Bioinform\u00e1tica de Virginia (IBC<\/a>) comunicado de prensa.<\/a>. La investigaci\u00f3n se centrar\u00e1 en el desarrollo de nuevos enfoques de protecci\u00f3n de cultivos contra una amplia gama de enfermedades causadas por hongos y pat\u00f3genos similares a los hongos, espec\u00edficamente dirigidos al cacao. En muchos pa\u00edses en desarrollo, el cacao es un cultivo de importancia econ\u00f3mica y ecol\u00f3gica. Aproximadamente tres millones de toneladas de cacao, que se elabora a partir de semillas de cacao, se producen anualmente en todo el mundo, seg\u00fan el Organizaci\u00f3n Internacional del Cacao<\/a>. Si bien \u00c1frica produce 70% del cacao del mundo, tambi\u00e9n es un importante producto de exportaci\u00f3n en Ecuador, Venezuela, Brasil, Costa Rica, Malasia e Indonesia. M\u00e1s de 90% de la producci\u00f3n mundial de cacao proviene de peque\u00f1as fincas.<\/p>\n

Los rendimientos de cacao pueden verse limitados por enfermedades de las plantas causadas por hongos y pat\u00f3genos del moho del agua (oomicetos). La investigaci\u00f3n principal se centra en dos de los mecanismos de los pat\u00f3genos para infectar la planta. Primero, el equipo explorar\u00e1 la utilidad de una prote\u00edna antimicrobiana para atacar y afectar la infecci\u00f3n dentro de las partes de alimentaci\u00f3n (haustoria) del pat\u00f3geno.
