UU. <\/a>en Beltsville, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n se centrar\u00e1 en el desarrollo de nuevos enfoques de protecci\u00f3n de cultivos contra una amplia gama de enfermedades causadas por hongos y pat\u00f3genos similares a los hongos, espec\u00edficamente dirigidos al cacao. En muchos pa\u00edses en desarrollo, el cacao es un cultivo de importancia econ\u00f3mica y ecol\u00f3gica. M\u00e1s de 90% de la producci\u00f3n mundial de cacao proviene de peque\u00f1as fincas.<\/p>\n<p>Los rendimientos de cacao pueden verse limitados por enfermedades de las plantas causadas por hongos y pat\u00f3genos del moho del agua (oomicetos). La investigaci\u00f3n principal se centra en dos de los mecanismos de los pat\u00f3genos para infectar la planta. Primero, el equipo explorar\u00e1 la utilidad de una prote\u00edna antimicrobiana para atacar y afectar la infecci\u00f3n dentro de las partes de alimentaci\u00f3n (haustoria) del pat\u00f3geno. En segundo lugar, los investigadores intentar\u00e1n bloquear la entrada de prote\u00ednas de virulencia que los pat\u00f3genos secretan en las c\u00e9lulas hu\u00e9sped para provocar la enfermedad.
