De 1995 a 2013, la exposici\u00f3n de los alimentos a los carbamatos, que incluye metomilo, se redujo en aproximadamente 70%. La acci\u00f3n es una continuaci\u00f3n de los esfuerzos de la EPA para reducir el uso de carbamatos, protegiendo as\u00ed la salud de las personas, especialmente la salud de los ni\u00f1os que pueden ser m\u00e1s sensibles a los pesticidas.<\/p>\n<p>La EPA descubri\u00f3 los riesgos del agua potable durante la evaluaci\u00f3n peri\u00f3dica del metomilo y negoci\u00f3 con los fabricantes la cancelaci\u00f3n voluntaria de ciertos usos. La cancelaci\u00f3n voluntaria es la forma m\u00e1s r\u00e1pida de eliminar el riesgo.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien Florida y California fueron las \u00e1reas de mayor preocupaci\u00f3n por los riesgos del metomilo en el agua potable, las siguientes medidas se implementar\u00e1n en todo el pa\u00eds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0cancelar el uso en cebada, avena y centeno;<\/li>\n<li>limitar su uso en trigo a Idaho, Oregon y Washington;<\/li>\n<li>reducir el n\u00famero de aplicaciones a ma\u00edz, apio y lechuga de cabeza y hoja; y,<\/li>\n<li>reduciendo el n\u00famero de aplicaciones y la tasa m\u00e1xima de aplicaci\u00f3n estacional para pimientos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Actualmente, estas medidas se est\u00e1n introduciendo gradualmente, lo que garantiza la implementaci\u00f3n oportuna de los cambios para varios cultivos.<\/p>\n<p>La EPA y los fabricantes llegaron a un acuerdo para dejar de fabricar y vender algunos productos de cebo para moscas y agregar informaci\u00f3n a la etiqueta que aclare los usos aprobados. La EPA cree que estos cambios reducir\u00e1n el uso ilegal de productos de cebo para moscas de metomilo que pueden matar la vida silvestre, un problema que varios estados informaron a la EPA.<\/p>\n<p>Registrado por primera vez en 1968 y luego reregistrado en 1998, el metomilo est\u00e1 restringido y solo debe ser utilizado por aplicadores certificados y capacitados y no tiene usos residenciales. El \u00fanico uso no agr\u00edcola del metomilo es el cebo para moscas.<\/p>\n<p>La EPA continuar\u00e1 el proceso de revisi\u00f3n del registro de metomilo. El siguiente paso en ese proceso es la publicaci\u00f3n del borrador de evaluaci\u00f3n de riesgos de metomilo en 2016. En noviembre de 2014, la EPA solicit\u00f3 comentarios p\u00fablicos sobre las solicitudes para cancelar voluntariamente los usos de metomilo en cebada, avena y centeno. No se recibieron comentarios.
