M\u00e1s del 80% de su cultivo es de secano. La sequ\u00eda es una amenaza constante. En Am\u00e9rica Latina y \u00c1frica, los mejoradores han logrado un buen progreso en el desarrollo de ma\u00edz tolerante a la sequ\u00eda, pero Asia hasta ahora se ha quedado atr\u00e1s. Una asociaci\u00f3n p\u00fablico-privada (APP) encabezada por la Fundaci\u00f3n Syngenta para la Agricultura Sostenible tiene como objetivo mejorar la situaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La asociaci\u00f3n se centra en la entrega a los peque\u00f1os agricultores de lo que llama \u201cma\u00edz AAA\u201d: ma\u00edz asequible, accesible y asi\u00e1tico. Los socios del sector p\u00fablico son el Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Ma\u00edz y Trigo con sede en M\u00e9xico, m\u00e1s conocido como CIMMYT, y las unidades de cereales de los servicios nacionales de investigaci\u00f3n agr\u00edcola (SNIA) en Vietnam e Indonesia. La experiencia en desarrollo del sector privado proviene de Syngenta AG. \u201cEl principal objetivo conjunto de los socios es convertir germoplasma del CIMMYT tolerante a la sequ\u00eda en variedades de ma\u00edz de relevancia local y hacerlas llegar a los agricultores\u201d, dice el Dr. Ian Barker, director de asociaciones agr\u00edcolas de la Fundaci\u00f3n Syngenta. El PPP se ha movido muy r\u00e1pido. \u201cLas primeras variedades deber\u00edan estar pronto disponibles para los agricultores, despu\u00e9s de solo seis a\u00f1os de trabajo. La I + D de este tipo normalmente lleva el doble o el triple de tiempo &quot;.<\/p>\n<p>La clave ha sido combinar las fortalezas complementarias de las instituciones p\u00fablicas y privadas. El CIMMYT aporta una enorme diversidad de germoplasma, por ejemplo, mientras que Syngenta es fuerte en el genotipado de plantas y el mejoramiento asistido por marcadores. La participaci\u00f3n de los NARS locales asegura v\u00ednculos estrechos con las condiciones de cultivo de la vida real en \u00e1reas de escasas precipitaciones.<\/p>\n<p>Desde el principio, ha quedado claro para todos los socios que el ma\u00edz debe ser un bien p\u00fablico, accesible para todos. \u201cAdem\u00e1s, Syngenta AG no vender\u00e1 estas variedades\u201d, dice Barker. &quot;Las peque\u00f1as y medianas empresas de semillas, principalmente de la India, ser\u00e1n las que entreguen el ma\u00edz que ahorra agua a los peque\u00f1os agricultores&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>La experiencia con la cooperaci\u00f3n hasta ahora sugiere que este modelo puede ofrecer excelentes resultados.
