En la temporada de cultivo de 2017, el gusano cogollero infest\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 24% de los 2,9 millones de hect\u00e1reas plantadas con ma\u00edz, con una p\u00e9rdida total de m\u00e1s de 134.000 toneladas de cultivo por un valor de casi $30 millones. Este brote ha afectado a millones de peque\u00f1os agricultores en todo el pa\u00eds y ha llevado al Gobierno de Etiop\u00eda a priorizar la implementaci\u00f3n del plan de trabajo de FAW 2018.<\/li>\n<li>En <strong>Sud\u00e1n del Sur<\/strong>, El gusano cogollero se detect\u00f3 en cultivos de ma\u00edz sembrados temprano en el estado ecuatorial occidental a fines de marzo de 2018, y se espera que la plaga contin\u00fae apareciendo en vastas \u00e1reas del pa\u00eds a medida que avanza la siembra.<\/li>\n<li>En <strong>Kenia<\/strong>, Se informaron brotes de gusano cogollero en los condados de Kericho, Nyeri, Embu, Nakuru y Meru que atacaban el ma\u00edz de siembra temprana. La FAO envi\u00f3 un equipo de evaluaci\u00f3n a principios de marzo de 2018 para realizar evaluaciones y brindar capacitaci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Pron\u00f3stico<\/h2>\n<p>El gusano cogollero seguir\u00e1 siendo una amenaza para el ma\u00edz de regad\u00edo y de secano y otros cultivos en varias regiones de \u00c1frica durante las pr\u00f3ximas seis semanas. Fuente: Gro-Intelligence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Para la temporada 2018, las combinaciones de precipitaci\u00f3n, clima c\u00e1lido y vegetaci\u00f3n verde deben vigilarse de cerca, ya que esta combinaci\u00f3n, junto con la trayectoria del viento estacional, puede favorecer la reproducci\u00f3n y facilitar la migraci\u00f3n y una mayor propagaci\u00f3n de plagas migratorias.<\/p>\n<p>El mapa de la derecha muestra anomal\u00edas diarias en las precipitaciones en pa\u00edses seleccionados del este de \u00c1frica, y esas \u00e1reas en azul reciben una cantidad significativamente mayor de precipitaciones de lo normal, lo que resulta en una mayor vulnerabilidad a la infestaci\u00f3n de gusanos cogollos.<\/p>\n<p>Esas \u00e1reas sombreadas en rojo pueden ser menos susceptibles al gusano cogollero debido a la reducci\u00f3n de las precipitaciones, pero las \u00e1reas afectadas por la sequ\u00eda tienen un riesgo significativo de reducci\u00f3n de los rendimientos esta temporada debido a la falta de humedad.<\/p>\n<p>Las intervenciones activas de vigilancia, monitoreo, exploraci\u00f3n de rutina y control siguen siendo cr\u00edticas para contrarrestar el potencial de p\u00e9rdidas importantes de cultivos debido al gusano cogollero.<\/p>\n<h2>Herramientas para contrarrestar la invasi\u00f3n FAW<\/h2>\n<p>Aunque el gusano cogollero ha sido durante mucho tiempo una plaga en Am\u00e9rica del Norte y del Sur, los agricultores all\u00ed pueden controlar la plaga con el manejo integrado de plagas (MIP) y tecnolog\u00edas como semillas e insecticidas gen\u00e9ticamente modificados (GM).<\/p>\n<p>Los peque\u00f1os agricultores africanos se enfrentan a una plaga que es nueva para ellos y se propaga r\u00e1pidamente, y a menudo carecen de acceso a informaci\u00f3n oportuna, capacitaci\u00f3n y plaguicidas seguros y eficaces. Las herramientas disponibles consisten en rotaci\u00f3n de cultivos e insecticidas. Cuando no hay otras opciones disponibles, algunos peque\u00f1os agricultores han utilizado productos naturales como aceite de neem, pimienta o ceniza de madera con distintos niveles de eficacia.<\/p>\n<p>CABI ha lanzado recientemente un nuevo proyecto que adopta un enfoque de tres frentes de &quot;defender, detectar y derrotar&quot; para combatir el gusano cogollero. Una tecnolog\u00eda push-pull que est\u00e1n probando con cultivos forrajeros seleccionados como el desmodium greenleaf y el pasto Napier muestra algunos resultados positivos como parte de la estrategia de &#039;derrota&#039;, pero esta pr\u00e1ctica cultural no es una soluci\u00f3n inmediata cuando los insectos aparecen inesperados.<\/p>\n<p>La FAO ha desarrollado una aplicaci\u00f3n m\u00f3vil para que los agricultores, los extensionistas y otros socios ayuden a identificar y trazar un mapa de la propagaci\u00f3n del gusano cogollero en \u00c1frica, as\u00ed como compartir las medidas m\u00e1s efectivas para manejar y controlar la plaga.<\/p>\n<h2>Llamada a la acci\u00f3n<\/h2>\n<p>Se necesitan sistemas coordinados y hol\u00edsticos para reducir la amenaza que se avecina dada la invasi\u00f3n sorprendentemente r\u00e1pida en todo el continente africano, la posibilidad significativa de p\u00e9rdida de alto rendimiento y los factores ambientales que favorecen las infestaciones de gusano cogollero esta temporada.<\/p>\n<p>El sector privado mundial, las universidades y los centros de investigaci\u00f3n, las fundaciones, las organizaciones de la sociedad civil y otros socios para el desarrollo son necesarios para unirse a los africanos para combatir eficazmente el gusano cogollero.
