Nueva investigaci\u00f3n de <a href=\"https:\/\/msutoday.msu.edu\/news\/2018\/soil-holds-the-secret-to-mitigating-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universidad del estado de michigan<\/a> sugiere que los rendimientos de los cultivos y la cadena mundial de suministro de alimentos pueden preservarse aprovechando el socio fundamental, y a menudo pasado por alto, en el suministro de alimentos: el suelo.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n, dirigida por el profesor Bruno Basso de la Fundaci\u00f3n MSU y publicada en Agriculture and Environmental Letters, es la primera de su tipo en brindar una visi\u00f3n cr\u00edtica de la importancia del suelo en la gesti\u00f3n de los riesgos asociados con el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa sostenibilidad a largo plazo de los sistemas agr\u00edcolas depende en gran medida de c\u00f3mo usemos el suelo\u201d, dijo Basso. &quot;Esta investigaci\u00f3n demuestra que con la aplicaci\u00f3n de la innovaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de una mejor gesti\u00f3n del suelo, estamos un paso m\u00e1s cerca de preservar nuestro suministro de alimentos y mitigar el efecto que el cambio clim\u00e1tico y el calentamiento global tienen en nuestras vidas&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Al aprender a aprovechar, proteger y mejorar cient\u00edficamente la salud del suelo, los hallazgos de Basso demuestran que los rendimientos de los cultivos pueden continuar en los niveles de producci\u00f3n actuales o incluso mejorar, especialmente si se combinan con pr\u00e1cticas agr\u00edcolas adaptativas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHasta ahora, la investigaci\u00f3n no ha tenido en cuenta lo que el suelo devuelve al ciclo del cambio clim\u00e1tico, y podr\u00eda decirse que es el recurso m\u00e1s cr\u00edtico para adaptarse para mitigar sus efectos\u201d, dijo Basso. \u201cEn \u00faltima instancia, el suelo es el &#039;hogar&#039; de las plantas. Si no nos ocupamos del suelo, las plantas y los cultivos quedan desamparados y se les deja para hacer frente al cambio clim\u00e1tico por su cuenta &quot;.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n de Basso fue parte del Proyecto de Intercomparaci\u00f3n y Mejora de Modelos Agr\u00edcolas, o AgMIP, una iniciativa global que vincula comunidades de modelos clim\u00e1ticos, agr\u00edcolas y econ\u00f3micos para evaluar el destino de la producci\u00f3n de alimentos bajo el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>Basso encabez\u00f3 la iniciativa de suelos de AgMIP y propuso que, en el futuro, el suelo se posicione como el centro del ciclo de producci\u00f3n de alimentos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntramos en el proyecto sabiendo que con el clima cada vez m\u00e1s caluroso, se pronostica que los rendimientos de los cultivos ser\u00e1n menores. Si el rendimiento disminuye, tambi\u00e9n significa que la cantidad de carbono que se devuelve al suelo tambi\u00e9n disminuye, por lo que la pregunta que ten\u00edamos era: &#039;si este ciclo contin\u00faa, \u00bfd\u00f3nde terminamos y qu\u00e9 papel tendr\u00e1 el suelo? Y, \u00bfestaremos peor si no cuidamos el suelo? As\u00ed que ejecutamos modelos de cultivos y suelos para simular el impacto del clima en el rendimiento de un cultivo y el carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo para evaluar las reacciones del suelo al cambio clim\u00e1tico \u201d, dijo Basso.<\/p>\n<p>Basso ejecut\u00f3 una serie de modelos en Tanzania, Brasil, Argentina, Pa\u00edses Bajos, Francia, Estados Unidos y Australia para probar las reacciones del suelo a los cambios en la temperatura y los niveles de di\u00f3xido de carbono mediante el an\u00e1lisis de los niveles de nitr\u00f3geno y carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo.<\/p>\n<p>Lo que encontraron los investigadores fue que el di\u00f3xido de carbono compensaba las p\u00e9rdidas de rendimiento causadas por el clima porque actuaba como un fertilizante natural para ayudar a que los cultivos crecieran. Pero cuando se incluyeron en el an\u00e1lisis las p\u00e9rdidas de carbono org\u00e1nico del suelo, el aumento de di\u00f3xido de carbono en la atm\u00f3sfera no fue suficiente para evitar p\u00e9rdidas de rendimiento.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPor lo tanto, a trav\u00e9s del manejo agron\u00f3mico, que es &#039;hacer lo correcto en el momento adecuado para sus cultivos&#039;, se puede mejorar la calidad y la salud del suelo\u201d. Dijo Basso.<\/p>\n<p>Basso explic\u00f3 c\u00f3mo los agricultores pueden practicar un mejor manejo agron\u00f3mico para proteger el suelo contra los efectos del cambio clim\u00e1tico.
