No pas\u00f3 mucho tiempo antes de que la resoluci\u00f3n fuera destruida despu\u00e9s de que se hizo evidente que los OGM tienen el potencial de redefinir la agricultura. A pesar de la inquietud inherente, \u00c1frica se est\u00e1 convirtiendo en la pr\u00f3xima frontera para la tecnolog\u00eda transg\u00e9nica, aunque lentamente. En una entrevista con <em>Agribusiness Global \u2122<\/em>, Prof. Dorington Ogoyi, Director Gerente de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biosafetykenya.go.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autoridad Nacional de Bioseguridad de Kenia<\/a>, pone en perspectiva los problemas relacionados con los OMG. La Autoridad Nacional de Bioseguridad (NBA) es una agencia reguladora encargada de supervisar las actividades relacionadas con los organismos gen\u00e9ticamente modificados. Desde su creaci\u00f3n, NBA ha revisado m\u00e1s de 28 aplicaciones de uso confinado. Estas son aplicaciones realizadas en el laboratorio. Hemos aprobado 14 ensayos de campo confinados y revisado dos solicitudes de liberaci\u00f3n ambiental para el algod\u00f3n Bt y el ma\u00edz Bt. El algod\u00f3n Bt ha avanzado y esperamos que comiencen (pronto) las pruebas de rendimiento nacionales. El ma\u00edz Bt todav\u00eda tiene algunos problemas por resolver.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P. \u00bfKenia permite alguna forma de OMG?<\/strong><br \/>\nSi la pregunta es: &quot;\u00bfTenemos OGM en el mercado?&quot;, Entonces la respuesta es &quot;no&quot; desde el punto de vista regulatorio. No hemos aprobado ning\u00fan producto para su colocaci\u00f3n en el mercado. En 2012, Kenia prohibi\u00f3 las importaciones de OGM y, t\u00e9cnicamente, como agencia, se supone que debemos hacer cumplir esa prohibici\u00f3n. Mientras hablamos, no se permiten importaciones que sean transg\u00e9nicos en Kenia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P. Se ha hablado de levantar la prohibici\u00f3n. \u00bfCu\u00e1l es la posici\u00f3n de la NBA?<\/strong><br \/>\nDesde nuestra perspectiva, aconsejamos al gobierno en qu\u00e9 direcci\u00f3n tomar, que es que la prohibici\u00f3n debe levantarse para permitir que Kenia obtenga todos los beneficios de la tecnolog\u00eda transg\u00e9nica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P. \u00bfPueden los OGM ayudar a abordar el problema del gusano cogollero?<\/strong><br \/>\nEl gusano cogollero es una nueva plaga en esta regi\u00f3n. El enfoque ahora es b\u00e1sicamente aplicar muchos insecticidas e identificar cu\u00e1les son ideales. Creo que al final del d\u00eda, la gesti\u00f3n del gusano tendr\u00e1 que ser mediante el uso de varios enfoques. El ma\u00edz Bt aprobado para la prueba de rendimiento nacional tiene algunos impactos en el gusano cogollero, aunque no fue dise\u00f1ado para el gusano. Este es un efecto secundario positivo. Si los cient\u00edficos tienen la oportunidad de buscar cepas de Bt que puedan ser efectivas contra el gusano cogollero, es posible que podamos introducirlas en el ma\u00edz y controlar el gusano. Los productos OGM pueden ser uno de los kits de herramientas que se pueden utilizar para controlar el gusano cogollero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P. \u00bfPueden coexistir los cultivos transg\u00e9nicos y no transg\u00e9nicos?<\/strong><br \/>\nS\u00ed, los OGM pueden coexistir con cultivos convencionales. Incluso cuando observa c\u00f3mo los pa\u00edses l\u00edderes en el sector del algod\u00f3n han adoptado los OGM, todav\u00eda hay un porcentaje que sigue cultivando productos org\u00e1nicos. Incluso en Brasil, donde la adopci\u00f3n de OGM es muy alta, todav\u00eda tienen una disposici\u00f3n para cultivar no OGM. Existen mecanismos para hacer esto, como el aislamiento, el espaciamiento, la siembra en diferentes estaciones, la zonificaci\u00f3n y la siembra en diferentes momentos. Por ejemplo, si siembra ma\u00edz con 10 d\u00edas de diferencia, la posibilidad de polinizaci\u00f3n cruzada es nula porque estar\u00e1n en diferentes etapas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>P. \u00bfC\u00f3mo ha impactado la Uni\u00f3n Europea (UE) a los pa\u00edses africanos con respecto a la tecnolog\u00eda transg\u00e9nica?<\/strong><br \/>\nLa cuesti\u00f3n de la UE a veces se tergiversa porque la UE, si nos fijamos en los registros, es el principal importador de productos transg\u00e9nicos de Am\u00e9rica del Sur. Importan toneladas de soja, aceite de soja, productos de ma\u00edz entre otros. Son los mayores consumidores de productos de pa\u00edses de Am\u00e9rica del Sur, que han adoptado una serie de tecnolog\u00edas transg\u00e9nicas. La \u00fanica condici\u00f3n que establece la UE es que debe aprobar el producto. Si Kenia, o cualquier otro pa\u00eds africano, va a producir productos transg\u00e9nicos, deben ser aprobados por la UE para las importaciones.
