The plant health segment of crop inputs is growing around the world.\u00a0India\u00a0is\u00a0no exception,\u00a0and with a large part of the country\u00a0dedicated to\u00a0agriculture,\u00a0the market potential has biological product manufacturers excited about the future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently it is going to the direction of growth, MNCs in India are slowly recognizing the biological\u00a0agri-inputs and have started working towards them to expand the portfolio,\u201d says Dhiraj\u00a0Sakunde, Manager \u2013 International Business for\u00a0Mumbai-based\u00a0Geolife<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the overall biological market is growing,\u00a0not all\u00a0segments\u00a0have received the same interest from growers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExcept for Neem-based\u00a0biopesticides\u00a0\u2013\u00a0all other\u00a0biopesticides are still in\u00a0a\u00a0primordial phase,\u201d says\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Venkatesh\u00a0Devanur, CEO\u00a0of Hyderabad-based\u00a0AgriLife<\/a>. \u201cBiofertilizers are largely in\u00a0the\u00a0government purchase\u00a0program. Not much is purchased by farmers.\u00a0Biostimulants\u00a0have big acceptance in India.\u00a0Humic\u00a0substances,\u00a0seaweed fertilizers,\u00a0and\u00a0amino acids are very popular.\u00a0(We see)\u00a0100,000 -150,000 MT of bentonite granule-based products are sold with dose rate of 10-15 kg per Ha.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with a\u00a0pandemic\u00a0ravaging\u00a0societies\u00a0around the world, these products\u00a0don\u2019t appear to have been adversely impacted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Geolife\u00a0has seen growth throughout the country and continues to sell its products internationally.\u00a0Even the COVID-19 pandemic,\u00a0which has ravaged countries around the world,\u00a0could not slow the\u00a0growth of these products.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact,\u00a0the\u00a0Indian market has seen the growth in the demand of organic\u00a0agri-produce\u00a0during the\u00a0pandemic and it has given opportunities\u00a0to\u00a0many to start the business,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean the pandemic hasn\u2019t created a few issues for manufacturers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cManufacturers had to deal with non-agricultural issues the most,\u00a0such as shortage of manpower and lack of capital in the market, resulting into higher wages and longer credits,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cAs for the products, they did exceptionally well.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That enthusiasm for these products is only one factor.\u00a0Driving that change is a desire for \u201cresidue-free harvest that leads to additional income for the farmers,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFarmers are paying attention to the soil health, microbial population,\u00a0and\u00a0many other factors that make the soil alive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sakunde\u00a0notes some reluctance\u00a0remains on the part of growers who are more familiar with the\u00a0speed with which more traditional\u00a0(non-biological) products\u00a0deliver results. Though effective, some biological solutions don\u2019t\u00a0provide the quick response growers\u00a0are\u00a0used to, though he believes that can be overcome.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Devanur\u00a0has seen similar concerns.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMicrobial biopesticides and\u00a0bioertilizers\u00a0are not impressing farmers,\u201d he says. \u201cFarmers want knock down for pesticides and\u00a0see\u00a0\u2018ideal\u00a0greening\u2019\u00a0effects\u00a0from\u00a0fertilizers.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0Devanur\u00a0says,\u00a0biostimulants\u00a0are impressing farmers\u00a0because deliverables of such products seem to\u00a0impress\u00a0them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It will take a change in mindset for growers to understand that\u00a0while effective\u00a0biological products do require more time than their traditional counterparts to\u00a0show results.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResults are slower than the chemical alternatives,\u00a0which makes growers worried about\u00a0the end result. But that is a very short-term issue,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says. \u201cA manufacturer needs to be genuine, disciplined,\u00a0and regularized while being innovative\u00a0and\u00a0research-based to bring more products in the market.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

OPPORTUNITIES<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cThe biggest opportunity is to produce the residue-free harvest to ensure the healthy food ecosystem within the country as well as the growing exports,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cGeolife\u00a0is also promoting sustainable agriculture by supporting\u00a0biofertlizers\u00a0and biologicals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to supporting the domestic market, many growers use these products, which enables them to meet\u00a0exporting requirements in which they hope to sell their crops.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Growers using Agrilife products have seen good results when it comes to exporting g<\/span>rapes, spices, basmati rice, and chilies, Devanur says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CHALLENGES<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite the promise\u00a0of\u00a0biological products\u00a0there are some challenges that could slow the\u00a0rate of\u00a0growth.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLack of awareness about biologicals can result into hindrance. People are still more confident about chemicals despite the wide studies showing the long-term negative effects of the same,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are some challenges beyond\u00a0awareness.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFarmers\u2019\u00a0expectations are\u00a0more guided by what they get from chemicals,\u201d\u00a0Devanur\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cIt is not possible\u00a0to deliver such expectations.\u00a0Microbial products need some ideal weather conditions to work well,\u201d\u00a0Devanur\u00a0says. \u201cIt is not possible to get such conditions round the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

REGULATORY CONCERNS<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Like in many parts of the world, the government\u2019s approach to\u00a0registering biological products is a bit of a mixed bag.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRegistrations for biologicals\u00a0in India\u00a0currently\u00a0are\u00a0not very strict but well managed,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cThe country needs\u00a0more regulations to discipline the market.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of the issue is the varied approach to the different biological segments.\u00a0Agrilife\u2019s\u00a0Devanur\u00a0explains how each segment is treated by\u00a0the regulatory agency.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Biopesticides have very well-defined regulatory data requirements. Government agricultural institutions offer technology at\u00a0a\u00a0very modest cost. And registration of such products is\u00a0easy. Companies can also generate data and register the products.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Biofertilizers do not need any data and companies\u00a0can get sales permission from state governments after inspection of manufacturing facilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Biostimulants\u00a0have just come under regulatory\u00a0review\u00a0\u2013\u00a0toxicology,\u00a0physchem,\u00a0and bio-efficacy data is needed to register the products.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cIn terms of demand generation,\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic has given the boost to the biologicals,\u00a0and it will further grow exponentially,\u201d\u00a0Sakunde\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cIn terms of regulations, the changes are going to be volatile and increased demand brought the need on radar.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In doing so, the government can support the biological market in several ways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cGovernment can identify the factors to distinguish the biological products from chemical products and set the parameters to test the biologicals in easier, faster, and economical way,\u201d Sakunde says. \u201cAlso, Geolife can declare a few more Indian states as completely organic states.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Biological plant health products\u00a0remain a\u00a0small piece of the crop input market in India,\u00a0but that is changing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
