Adem\u00e1s, a trav\u00e9s de una asociaci\u00f3n africana con One Acre Fund, su objetivo es llegar a tres millones de agricultores y, en \u00faltima instancia, proporcionar alimentos a m\u00e1s de 100 millones de personas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Durante los \u00faltimos 14 a\u00f1os, he tenido la misi\u00f3n de abordar una de las causas m\u00e1s mort\u00edferas de desnutrici\u00f3n y muerte infantil en el mundo: el ma\u00edz. El ma\u00edz est\u00e1 en todas partes de \u00c1frica y Mesoam\u00e9rica. Es productivo, f\u00e1cil de cultivar y normalmente el alimento m\u00e1s barato. Ha sido el alimento b\u00e1sico en ambas regiones durante siglos y milenios. Hoy alimenta a 1.200 millones de personas.<\/p>\n

Desafortunadamente, el ma\u00edz no tiene los nutrientes que necesitan los ni\u00f1os. La desnutrici\u00f3n es responsable de 45% de muertes infantiles, y el ma\u00edz es uno de los mayores contribuyentes del mundo. Aqu\u00ed, la popularidad del ma\u00edz se convierte en un problema enorme. \u00bfQu\u00e9 haces cuando los alimentos m\u00e1s nutritivos son mucho m\u00e1s caros o dif\u00edciles de cultivar? \u00bfC\u00f3mo se le pide a la gente que renuncie a cientos o miles de a\u00f1os de cultura?<\/p>\n

En Guatemala decidimos que deber\u00edamos mejorar el ma\u00edz. Encontramos semillas de ma\u00edz que naturalmente ten\u00edan m\u00e1s hierro, zinc y prote\u00ednas y las cruzamos con semillas que brindaron a los agricultores el rendimiento y la resiliencia clim\u00e1tica que m\u00e1s desean. Nos asociamos con cooperativas y empresas de semillas locales para hacer llegar esas semillas a los agricultores a precios que pudieran pagar. En 2023, 24.000 agricultores utilizaron nuestras semillas, alimentando a casi un mill\u00f3n de personas en un pa\u00eds con la cuarta tasa m\u00e1s alta de desnutrici\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n

Con el modelo funcionando, nuestro objetivo es llegar a 3 millones de agricultores y alimentar a 100 millones de personas. El camino hacia ese objetivo se nos abri\u00f3 de forma masiva en diciembre de 2023, en los Emiratos \u00c1rabes Unidos. Hab\u00edamos sido seleccionados como uno de los 15 finalistas del Premio Zayed a la Sostenibilidad<\/a>. La ceremonia se celebr\u00f3 durante COP28<\/a>, y fue un gran golpe de suerte que la conferencia clim\u00e1tica m\u00e1s importante del mundo se celebrara en los Emiratos \u00c1rabes Unidos ese a\u00f1o. Para la mayor\u00eda de nosotros, era la primera vez que asist\u00edamos a una COP y el equipo del Premio nos ayud\u00f3 a aprovecharla al m\u00e1ximo. Nos dieron insignias del pa\u00eds anfitri\u00f3n, que nos permitieron acceder a algunas de las \u00e1reas y eventos m\u00e1s exclusivos. Promovieron nuestro trabajo sin descanso. Nos codeamos con premios Nobel y diplom\u00e1ticos. Nos pidieron que nos qued\u00e1ramos durante los primeros d\u00edas de la COP, pero despu\u00e9s de un encuentro casual, cambi\u00e9 mi vuelo para quedarme durante todo el evento.<\/p>\n

El primero abri\u00f3 nuestro camino hacia \u00c1frica. Una ONG llamada Fondo de un acre<\/a> atiende a m\u00e1s de 3 millones de productores de ma\u00edz all\u00ed. Son la organizaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s grande y mejor en nuestro espacio. Al igual que nosotros, luchan para que los agricultores de ma\u00edz sigan una dieta m\u00e1s nutritiva, pero nunca hab\u00edamos tenido la oportunidad de conocer a todas las personas adecuadas al mismo tiempo. En la COP, todas las personas adecuadas, que trabajan en semillas de ma\u00edz, innovaci\u00f3n y recaudaci\u00f3n de fondos, estuvieron all\u00ed al mismo tiempo.<\/p>\n

R\u00e1pidamente vimos el potencial de trabajar juntos y comenzamos a reunirnos casi todos los d\u00edas. El partido fue perfecto. One Acre Fund est\u00e1 asumiendo el liderazgo en el desarrollo de nuevas semillas de ma\u00edz en \u00c1frica Oriental y ayud\u00e1ndolas a llegar a los agricultores. Tenemos un m\u00e9todo probado y verdadero para tomar excelentes semillas nuevas y hacerlas nutritivas.<\/p>\n

Esbozamos un plan. Env\u00edan sus mejores semillas nuevas a Guatemala. Los hacemos nutritivos y los devolvemos. Comienzan a promocionar las nuevas versiones nutritivas de sus semillas. Con s\u00f3lo unos pocos esfuerzos adicionales de ambas partes, podemos allanar el camino para llegar a tres millones de agricultores y, en \u00faltima instancia, proporcionar alimentos a m\u00e1s de 100 millones de personas. Si ambos crecemos, la soluci\u00f3n podr\u00eda llegar a m\u00e1s de 500 millones. Lo que comenz\u00f3 en la COP ha cobrado impulso y culmin\u00f3 con la firma de un acuerdo de colaboraci\u00f3n a largo plazo para mayo de 2024.
