Sara Farrona, directora del Laboratorio de Epigen\u00e9tica del Desarrollo de Plantas de la Facultad de Ciencias Biol\u00f3gicas y Qu\u00edmicas de la Facultad de Ciencias e Ingenier\u00eda de la Universidad de Galway, afirm\u00f3: \u201cNuestro objetivo es investigar el potencial de las tecnolog\u00edas que podr\u00edan ayudar a los agricultores a cultivar en condiciones de estr\u00e9s relacionadas con el clima, como la sequ\u00eda. Los procesos epigen\u00e9ticos en biolog\u00eda son an\u00e1logos al software de una computadora. Mientras que los genomas se parecen al hardware que hace funcionar las c\u00e9lulas, los cambios epigen\u00e9ticos se parecen al software que controla cu\u00e1ndo se activan o desactivan los genes. Estos cambios pueden ocurrir de forma natural en respuesta a factores ambientales, vinculando las c\u00e9lulas a su entorno, pero sin alterar las secuencias de ADN de los cultivos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEste proyecto busca aprovechar estos procesos naturales para ofrecer nuevas tecnolog\u00edas sostenibles a los productores agr\u00edcolas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>El proyecto EpiSeedLink implica investigaci\u00f3n en tres \u00e1reas principales:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Germinaci\u00f3n de semillas:<\/strong> Entender c\u00f3mo los factores epigen\u00e9ticos influyen en el desarrollo de una nueva planta, conocido como transici\u00f3n de semilla a pl\u00e1ntula.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adaptaci\u00f3n al estr\u00e9s:<\/strong> Estudiar c\u00f3mo responden las plantas al estr\u00e9s por sequ\u00eda.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cebado de semillas:<\/strong> Desarrollo de tecnolog\u00edas para mejorar la tolerancia a la sequ\u00eda utilizando agentes de cebado de semillas moleculares provenientes de recursos marinos y terrestres renovables, como las algas marinas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Como parte del consorcio EpiSeedLink, la Universidad de Galway y BioAtlantis est\u00e1n albergando a estudiantes de doctorado que se est\u00e1n formando como la pr\u00f3xima generaci\u00f3n de cient\u00edficos vegetales en investigaci\u00f3n innovadora en epigen\u00e9tica vegetal, ofreciendo nuevas formas de mejorar el rendimiento de los cultivos y la resiliencia al estr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>El Dr. Sujeeth Neerakkal, director de investigaci\u00f3n de plantas de BioAtlantis Ltd, afirm\u00f3: \u201cEpiSeedLink es un proyecto de investigaci\u00f3n de vanguardia centrado en la modulaci\u00f3n del c\u00f3digo epigen\u00e9tico en los cultivos, utilizando nuevos agentes de iniciaci\u00f3n molecular.
