Egypt Allows First Biotech Crop

Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture has approved the decisions made by the country’s National Biosafety Committee (NBC) and Seed Registration Committee to allow the commercialization of a biotech corn variety Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture has approved the decisions made by the country’s National Biosafety Committee (NBC) and Seed Registration Committee to allow the commercialization of a biotech corn variety, the first genetically modified (GM) crop to be permitted in the country. The US Dept. of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA-FAS) reports that a local seed company acting as an agent of a multi-national company, had submitted the request and accompanying dossier several years ago.

During last year’s growing season, field trials were conducted and assessed. The local company plans to import seed from South Africa for propagation and production. The unnamed local company plans to cultivate the corn in 10 governates throughout Egypt and has already started a campaign to market the seed to producers and extension agents.
