EPA: Syngenta Seeds Fined For Pesticides Violations
O Agência de Proteção Ambiental dos EUA (EPA) has settled with Syngenta Seeds, Inc. over allegations of violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. Alleged pesticide worker protection violations at a site in Kekaha, Kauai, Hawaii, US include failure to store all personal protective equipment separately from clothing and apart from pesticide-contaminated areas, as well as the failure to post the spraying of the pesticide Liberty at its Central Notification Site.
The company also settled over allegations of violating federal pesticide regulations regarding use of a pesticide contrary to a provision of an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) issued by EPA. According to EPA, Syngenta Seeds did not obtain a State permit or license from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico prior to the shipment and/or use of an EUP-covered corn. These newest fines in the amount of US $17,550 are only part of three separate complaints totaling $284,050 in civil penalties .
The first two settlements include an agreement by Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. to pay a $196,300 penalty for the alleged violation of distributing Mesotrione Wet Paste with ingredients that differed in composition from the formula the company submitted to EPA, as well as alleged advertising violations of the pesticide Lumax Selective Herbicide due to television commercials aired in the Midwest not specifying that it was a restricted-use pesticide.
Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. also paid a penalty of $70,200 over self-disclosed violations under EPA’s Audit Policy regarding written advertisements for restricted use pesticides.
