Philippines: Super Typhoon Reming Damage Small

The Philippine Department of Agriculture’s assessments of the damage to farms from Super Typhoon Reming show minimal damage. Typhoon Reming (code named Durian) passed through the country November 28, causing an estimated US $16.6 million in damages to the ag sector, which is far less than similar sizde typhoons have caused.

The key details of the Department’s report were:

  • 37,000 metirc tons (MT) of rice covering 23,00 hectares (Ha), including 3,200 bags of NFA rice, were damaged. The total value of these losses is estimated at US $8.32 million.
  • US $1.22 million worth of maize (about 4,000 MT) were lost in an area of 7,000 Ha.
  • Coconut damage was placed at US $1.07 million in an area of 44,000 Ha.
  • Approximately US $2.9 million worth of high-value commercial crops (including mango, pineapples, etc.) were lost.
  • Damage to infrastructure was valued at US $1.4 million.

Typhoon Reming is the 18th storm to hit the country, and the third to be classified as a “super typhoon.”
