“The current geopolitical tensions, particularly around Iran, clearly demonstrate how dependent agriculture is on global supply chains. Rising energy prices and disrupted trade routes are directly leading to higher fertilizer prices – and thus increasing uncertainty for agricultural businesses,” explains Dr. Hanspeter Hueter, CEO of Hechenbichler GmbH, based in Innsbruck.
“As price pressure increases, the efficient use of fertilizers becomes ever more important. Making the best possible use of available resources in agriculture is both an economic and ecological necessity. However, a significant share of applied nutrients is currently lost – often because they are leached too quickly, volatilized, strongly bound in the soil, or because plants are unable to absorb them due to stress,” Hueter continues. “This is exactly where biostimulants come in, as they improve nutrient availability for plants and help retain nutrients where they are needed – through enhanced root growth, increased stress tolerance, and stimulation of biological processes in the soil.”
Biostimulants do not supply nutrients themselves but stimulate natural protection, life, and growth processes. In doing so, they improve the plant’s ability to use existing resources efficiently – even under stress conditions. This leads to healthier crops, more stable soils, and, in the long term, functional nutrient cycles.
“For farmers, the use of biostimulants means greater independence from volatile fertilizer prices and therefore increased economic stability. European biostimulants, such as AMALGEROL ESSENCE, which is produced entirely within the European Union, make a significant contribution to reducing dependence on international markets. This supports a more resilient agricultural system and strengthens food security across Europe.”
