A Lei de Prote\u00e7\u00e3o da Qualidade dos Alimentos (FQPA) dos EUA, o projeto de registro do Jap\u00e3o e a EC 91-414 da UE afetaram diversos produtos dispon\u00edveis aos agricultores e limitaram suas op\u00e7\u00f5es em rela\u00e7\u00e3o aos programas de prote\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivos. <\/p>\n<p> O resultado final foi uma \u00eanfase redobrada em produtos qu\u00edmicos mais suaves e maior seguran\u00e7a para a sa\u00fade e o meio ambiente, mas n\u00e3o foi uma transi\u00e7\u00e3o f\u00e1cil para muitos no setor. Um dos problemas do novo registro, particularmente sob a 91-414 da UE, era o custo associado \u00e0 defesa de um produto. Fabricantes menores de produtos p\u00f3s-patente que estavam em processo de novo registro, em alguns casos, n\u00e3o tinham capital financeiro para pagar para que o produto qu\u00edmico fosse testado novamente. Em muitos casos, a empresa que originalmente lan\u00e7ou o produto no mercado j\u00e1 tinha alternativas mais modernas ou simplesmente n\u00e3o acreditava que defender a mol\u00e9cula proporcionaria retorno suficiente sobre o investimento para justificar o custo. De acordo com alguns analistas, isso s\u00f3 serviu para limitar a capacidade do agricultor de escolher um produto mais antigo e mais barato que talvez n\u00e3o representasse riscos ambientais ou \u00e0 sa\u00fade.
