Enquanto esses produtos que aumentam a produtividade est\u00e3o sendo continuamente refinados, os pesquisadores agora est\u00e3o desenvolvendo produtos GM focados em requisitos diet\u00e9ticos.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Peixe Soja?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Atualmente em fase de aprova\u00e7\u00e3o regulat\u00f3ria est\u00e1 o primeiro produto biotecnol\u00f3gico da Monsanto com benef\u00edcio alimentar direto ao consumidor: SDA (\u00e1cido estearid\u00f4nico) \u00f4mega-3 de soja. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fwi.co.uk\/Articles\/2010\/01\/11\/119466\/Monsanto-hails-GM-launches-as-39game-changers39.htm\">Agricultores Semanais <\/a>descreve o novo produto de soja como \u201cuma fonte terrestre de SDA que se converte no \u00e1cido graxo \u00f4mega-3 saud\u00e1vel para o cora\u00e7\u00e3o encontrado no \u00f3leo de peixe\u201d \u2014 uma b\u00ean\u00e7\u00e3o para os consumidores que n\u00e3o podem ou n\u00e3o querem comer peixe, particularmente porque mais peixes contendo \u00f4mega-3, como atum e salm\u00e3o, s\u00e3o encontrados com altos n\u00edveis de merc\u00fario. A soja tamb\u00e9m pode beneficiar veganos e vegetarianos, bem como pessoas em regi\u00f5es onde frutos do mar frescos n\u00e3o est\u00e3o prontamente dispon\u00edveis.<\/p>\n<p>No ano passado o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\">Administra\u00e7\u00e3o de Alimentos e Medicamentos dos EUA<\/a> emitiu um aviso \u201cGeralmente Reconhecido como Seguro\u201d, que permite que empresas aliment\u00edcias formulem e testem o \u00f3leo de soja \u00f4mega-3 em uma variedade de alimentos.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Trigo sem gl\u00faten <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pesquisadores dos EUA dizem que a doen\u00e7a cel\u00edaca, uma rea\u00e7\u00e3o do sistema imunol\u00f3gico ao gl\u00faten na dieta, \u00e9 mais de quatro vezes mais comum hoje do que h\u00e1 50 anos, de acordo com <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2009\/07\/01\/Increase-in-celiac-disease-baffles-doctors\/UPI-93341246488619\/\">UPI<\/a>. A condi\u00e7\u00e3o digestiva, que danifica o intestino delgado e pode causar desnutri\u00e7\u00e3o, \u00e9 desencadeada pela prote\u00edna gl\u00faten encontrada na cevada, centeio e trigo. As gliadinas nos gr\u00e3os n\u00e3o podem ser digeridas por indiv\u00edduos com doen\u00e7a cel\u00edaca. Sem cura, os portadores da doen\u00e7a cel\u00edaca devem adotar uma dieta sem gl\u00faten, eliminando todas as fontes de gliadinas, como cerveja, cevada, centeio e alimentos \u00e0 base de trigo \u2014 bem como itens n\u00e3o aliment\u00edcios que usam as gliadinas como enchimento, como medicamentos, vitaminas e o adesivo em selos e envelopes. <\/p>\n<p> Dr. Diter von Wettstein, RA Nilan Distinguished Professor no Departamento de Ci\u00eancias das Culturas e do Solo e na Escola de Bioci\u00eancias Moleculares da <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsu.edu\/\">Universidade Estadual de Washington<\/a>, EUA, e sua equipe fizeram parceria com a empresa de biotecnologia sediada em Seattle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcadiabio.com\/\">Bioci\u00eancias Arc\u00e1dia<\/a> para avan\u00e7ar na pesquisa para desenvolver variedades de trigo sem gl\u00faten.<\/p>\n<p>Financiado por quase US$ 1,4 bilh\u00e3o em subs\u00eddios do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">Instituto Nacional de Sa\u00fade<\/a> e <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsdfa.org\/home.html\">Fundo de Descoberta em Ci\u00eancias Biol\u00f3gicas de Washington<\/a> em 2008 e 2009, von Wettstein e sua equipe identificaram um mutante de cevada totalmente vi\u00e1vel e rico em lisina, que n\u00e3o possui as gliadinas causadoras da doen\u00e7a cel\u00edaca e as gluteninas de baixo peso molecular, relata <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/2010\/01\/genetically-modified-foods-are-becoming-1\/\">Not\u00edcias de Seguran\u00e7a Alimentar<\/a>. A pesquisa de Von Wettstein \u00e9 direcionada para produzir um gr\u00e3o de trigo similar, preservando as qualidades de panifica\u00e7\u00e3o do trigo.
