Uma queda de 22% na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de caf\u00e9 do Qu\u00eania est\u00e1 resultando em uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o hist\u00f3rica baixa para 2007\/08 de cerca de 40.000 toneladas, de acordo com o Servi\u00e7o de Agricultura Estrangeira do Departamento de Agricultura dos EUA (a href=\u201dhttp:\/\/www.fas.usda.gov\/scripts\/gd.asp?ID=146294608″>USDA-FAS<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Os principais culpados pelo decl\u00ednio foram a presen\u00e7a da Doen\u00e7a do Caf\u00e9 (DCB), a concorr\u00eancia do Vietn\u00e3 e de outros produtores, o excesso de mercado, os problemas de liberaliza\u00e7\u00e3o do mercado, as inefici\u00eancias da gest\u00e3o cooperativa, os altos custos de produ\u00e7\u00e3o e as pr\u00e1ticas de manejo prec\u00e1rias entre os pequenos produtores.<\/p>\n

Uma onda de frio intensa e prolongada provocou um severo ataque de CBD. A oeste do Vale do Rift, o frio foi acompanhado por chuvas cont\u00ednuas, reduzindo a capacidade dos cafeeiros de florescer. Essas condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas favoreceram a prolifera\u00e7\u00e3o de CBD, resultando em enormes perdas tardias na colheita. Um estudo realizado pela Funda\u00e7\u00e3o de Pesquisa do Caf\u00e9<\/a> em nome do Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Comerciantes de Caf\u00e9 do Qu\u00eania<\/a> e o Banco Mundial<\/a> relataram uma perda de colheita de at\u00e9 80% em algumas partes das zonas superiores de Embu, Kirinyaga e Nyeri.<\/p>\n

No entanto, USDA-FAS<\/a> prev\u00ea um aumento de quase 30% para 2008\/09 como consequ\u00eancia dos ciclos bienais de produ\u00e7\u00e3o do caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Os custos de pulveriza\u00e7\u00e3o das variedades tradicionais de caf\u00e9 (geralmente com fungicidas \u00e0 base de cobre) triplicaram no \u00faltimo ano.
