O pr\u00eamio reconheceu a beterraba tropical da Syngenta como &quot;um exemplo de inova\u00e7\u00e3o tecnol\u00f3gica que ajuda a aumentar a produtividade agr\u00edcola sustent\u00e1vel para atender \u00e0 crescente demanda mundial por alimentos, ra\u00e7\u00f5es e combust\u00edveis&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>A beterraba tropical, que requer significativamente menos \u00e1gua do que a cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar, pode ser cultivada em \u00e1reas relativamente secas. A beterraba tamb\u00e9m cresce mais r\u00e1pido, o que permite aos agricultores cultivar uma segunda safra em suas terras no mesmo per\u00edodo em que a cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar amadurece, aumentando a produtividade e a renda dos agricultores e trazendo benef\u00edcios significativos para o setor agr\u00edcola dos mercados em desenvolvimento. A beterraba tropical oferece rendimentos semelhantes aos da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar e pode ser usada tanto para o processamento de a\u00e7\u00facar para alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o quanto para a convers\u00e3o em bioetanol.<\/p>\n<p>Em 2007, a beterraba \u2013 que levou 11 anos para ser desenvolvida pela Syngenta \u2013 foi introduzida com sucesso na \u00cdndia, onde a Syngenta auxiliou uma cooperativa de mais de 12.000 pequenos agricultores no estado de Maharashtra a construir e operar uma usina de produ\u00e7\u00e3o de bioetanol movida a beterraba tropical da Syngenta.
