Os tripes, que transmitem o v\u00edrus que causa a doen\u00e7a da murcha manchada do tomateiro (TSW), s\u00e3o insetos altamente visuais, afirma o grupo de pesquisa do Departamento de Agricultura dos EUA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS<\/a>). Cientistas da ARS e da Universidade da Fl\u00f3rida (UF<\/a>) est\u00e3o explorando essa depend\u00eancia para basicamente camuflar plantas de tomate. Em testes de campo, as plantas foram pulverizadas com caulim \u2014 um tipo de argila em p\u00f3 \u2014 e um dos tr\u00eas \u00f3leos essenciais de plantas que juntos reduziram a incid\u00eancia de TSW em 50%.<\/p>\n

De acordo com Stuart Reitz, um entomologista da Unidade de Pesquisa de Comportamento de Insetos e Biocontrole da ARS em Tallahassee, Fl\u00f3rida, EUA, o caulim forma uma camada branca que pode interferir na capacidade dos tripes de se concentrarem em pistas de cores durante o voo. Os tripes que pousam em plantas tratadas podem achar a camada de caulim dif\u00edcil de penetrar, o que pode diminuir sua transmiss\u00e3o do v\u00edrus TSW presente na saliva dos insetos. Usado sozinho, o caulim diminuiu o TSW em parcelas experimentais de tomate em 33%. Combin\u00e1-lo com \u00f3leo de melaleuca, \u00f3leo de capim-lim\u00e3o ou geraniol reduziu ainda mais a doen\u00e7a em 17%, relata Reitz.<\/p>\n

Surtos graves de tripes e TSW podem causar perdas de rendimento de 100%. Uma vez infectadas, as plantas n\u00e3o podem ser curadas. Mas em uma abordagem complementar, a equipe ARS-UF come\u00e7ou a testar em campo caulim e \u00f3leos essenciais mais acibenzolar-s-metil, um produto comercial que estimula os mecanismos naturais de defesa das plantas, potencialmente contendo o v\u00edrus TSW e limitando sua dissemina\u00e7\u00e3o.
