A coopera\u00e7\u00e3o compreende uma licen\u00e7a e um acordo de P&amp;D, que foram negociados por <a href=\"http:\/\/www.provendis.info\/\">PROvendis<\/a>, a empresa de marketing de patentes para universidades na Ren\u00e2nia do Norte-Vestf\u00e1lia da Alemanha. O Dr. J\u00fcrgen Walkenhorst, Chefe de Patentes e Licen\u00e7as da PROvendis, avaliou se as descobertas do Instituto Bot\u00e2nico poderiam ser patenteadas e potencialmente usadas comercialmente antes da transfer\u00eancia de tecnologia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Junto com a BASF Plant Science, o Prof. Dr. Ulf-Ingo Fl\u00fcgge e a Dra. Ver\u00f3nica G. Maurino do Instituto Bot\u00e2nico est\u00e3o trabalhando na otimiza\u00e7\u00e3o da gera\u00e7\u00e3o de energia de importantes culturas globais. Durante a fotoss\u00edntese, o processo em que o di\u00f3xido de carbono (CO2) \u00e9 convertido em carboidratos (por exemplo, amido), muitas plantas n\u00e3o fazem uso ideal do CO2 no ar. Certos tipos de plantas, como o milho, s\u00e3o capazes de usar mais CO2 por meio de um processo metab\u00f3lico adicional. O objetivo do atual projeto de pesquisa \u00e9 transferir esse mecanismo bioqu\u00edmico para outras plantas. Os pesquisadores de Col\u00f4nia j\u00e1 foram bem-sucedidos na modifica\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica de uma planta de teste, a chamada agri\u00e3o-de-thale (Arabidopsis thaliana). Gra\u00e7as aos genes inseridos, a planta produz enzimas especiais que garantem que a planta use mais di\u00f3xido de carbono, resultando na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de mais biomassa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOs benef\u00edcios comerciais da nossa descoberta s\u00e3o \u00f3bvios. Plantas que produzem mais biomassa tamb\u00e9m fornecem rendimentos mais altos\u201d, explicou Fl\u00fcgge. \u201cEstamos muito felizes em cooperar com a BASF Plant Science e pretendemos transferir nossas descobertas para as principais culturas\u201d, acrescentou o pesquisador. Em outro projeto, sua equipe tamb\u00e9m conseguiu reduzir a sensibilidade ao estresse das plantas. Foram identificados genes que permitem que o agri\u00e3o cres\u00e7a bem em solo muito salgado.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlantas de maior rendimento s\u00e3o essenciais para aumentar a efici\u00eancia na agricultura. Desenvolveremos ainda mais as descobertas promissoras da Universidade de Col\u00f4nia com o objetivo de trazer plantas de maior rendimento ao mercado\u201d, disse o Dr. J\u00fcrgen Logemann, Vice-Presidente de Gest\u00e3o de Tecnologia da BASF Plant Science. O cronograma para levar inova\u00e7\u00f5es em biotecnologia vegetal ao mercado \u00e9 de aproximadamente 10 anos.
