Our experts examine how biologicals are integrated into development alongside synthetics, share field-based case studies, and discuss the requirements for delivering next-generation solutions to African growers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Agroneg\u00f3cio Global<\/strong>: How are biologicals factored into R&amp;D alongside synthetics?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Carlos Led\u00f3 Orriach:<\/strong> Our approach to biologicals differs from that of synthetics across the full development continuum, from ideation through validation. While synthetic development focuses primarily on chemical efficacy and stability, biologicals introduce additional complexity due to their reliance on living organisms and plant-derived extracts.<\/p>\n<p>Microbial products, in particular, require careful assessment of active ingredient viability, given their sensitivity to environmental conditions such as degradation, volatility, and interactions with plant and soil microbiomes. Compatibility with synthetic chemistries is assessed early in both laboratory and field trials to identify potential antagonisms or synergies, with parallel testing of biologicals alone, and in combination, helping to better predict real-world performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vincent Gall:<\/strong> We follow a structured stage-gate process beginning with ideation, where biological and synthetic candidates are identified with an emphasis on integrated solutions. This is followed by scoping, which includes performance assessment, regulatory feasibility, freedom to operate, and supply considerations, then development and registration, which vary by region. The final stage is commercialization, where products are validated under real-world conditions through experimental farms in Europe and strategic partners in Africa. Performance is assessed across geographies to account for differences in climate, soils, and farming practices, making localized validation essential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Martin Montbarbon:<\/strong> Kenya Biologics, part of Elephant Vert with more than 10 years of research experience, focuses on both product performance and farmer usability, particularly within conventional systems.<\/p>\n<p>Because most of our customers are conventional growers, products must perform effectively within integrated programs alongside synthetic chemistries. Development begins with compatibility screening, including pH, tank mix stability, and survival with synthetic inputs, followed by in vitro assays, greenhouse trials, and multiregional field testing to account for environmental variability, such as humidity and altitude.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ABG<\/strong>: Can you share a case study using biologicals with synthetics?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Led\u00f3 Orriach:<\/strong> About 20 years ago in Mexico, we worked to register a mimosa extract\u2013based compound for Sclerotinia control in lettuce. At the time, regulators lacked frameworks for plant extracts with multiple active constituents, as customs analysis required a single defined active ingredient. Working with authorities, we identified gallic acid as a consistent marker compound, which formed the basis for registration. The resulting product enabled growers to control Sclerotinia without synthetic chemicals and supported improved export volumes and pricing to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gall<\/strong>: In Morocco, we are using a corn starch-based bioinsecticide, Eradicoat, in combination with a conventional miticide in commercial tomato production. Because it is residue free, it can be applied close to or during harvest while still meeting strict European retail standards. In Burkina Faso, the same product is used for fall armyworm control in maize, but adoption at scale remains a challenge. Even with established timing and dosage, success depends heavily on distribution networks, partnerships, and farmer education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montbarbon: <\/strong>In Kenya, floriculture illustrates a major shift in crop protection. Growers previously relied on up to 60 active ingredients, but next-generation biologicals \u2014 including microbial formulations with UV protection and Bacillus-derived metabolites \u2014 have reduced that number to fewer than 10, and in some cases fewer than six, while maintaining efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is attract-and-kill systems in avocado and citrus, where pheromones attract pests to devices containing minimal active ingredient, reducing spray volumes from liters per hectare to milliliters. Similar technologies are being developed with partners in South Africa for caterpillar control.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ABG<\/strong>: How do you ensure affordability for growers?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Led\u00f3 Orriach:<\/strong> We work with farmers from the outset through field trials, feedback loops, and co-development grounded in real farm needs. Effectiveness and affordability are central, particularly as the biocontrol market grows at more than 13% annually, driven in part by climate pressures in Africa. Growers of all scales are increasingly seeking tools that combine resistance management with ease of use. Our focus is on solutions that integrate biostimulant effects with pest control or improved nutrient efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gall:<\/strong> In Africa, we are not yet commercializing microbial products, so cold chain requirements are not currently a factor. Our portfolio is based on plant extracts, corn starch, and fatty acids, but this is expected to evolve through collaboration with Certis Bio in the U.S., which has a broader microbial pipeline. As microbial products expand into Africa and the Middle East, maintaining temperature-controlled logistics, including storage at around 4 degrees C, will become an important operational requirement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montbarbon:<\/strong> Biologicals fall into four categories \u2014 macroorganisms, microbes, plant extracts, and semiochemicals \u2014 each with distinct implications for registration, storage, and application. Large-scale export growers are relatively easy to engage directly, while smallholders require greater investment in awareness, demand creation, and distribution networks. Regulatory systems also remain uneven, with many biologicals still assessed under legacy chemical frameworks. While oversight is essential to ensure safety and efficacy, poor-quality products risk undermining confidence in the sector.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ABG<\/strong>: What is the regulatory outlook for biologicals in Africa?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Led\u00f3 Orriach:<\/strong> Many African regulatory systems still apply chemical-based frameworks to biological products, which are not always appropriate. Efficacy and toxicology requirements are often not well adapted, underscoring the need for updated approaches. Greater harmonization \u2014 similar to Europe\u2019s \u201cbasic substances\u201d framework \u2014 would improve consistency and cross-border movement. Fast-track pathways for lower-risk products would also help reduce delays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gall:<\/strong> A key challenge is the lack of expertise within regulatory bodies and the continued use of conventional chemical guidelines for biologicals. Harmonization remains limited, requiring country-by-country registration in most cases. We have experienced delays of several years for relatively low-risk products, including food-grade solutions requiring full toxicology packages. While some countries such as Kenya have faster pathways, broader regional alignment would significantly improve efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montbarbon:<\/strong> In Kenya, biocontrol registration typically takes about two years, while biostimulants can be approved in around six months. Kenya is leading regulatory development in East Africa, and neighboring countries are increasingly looking to its model for harmonization. Broader regional frameworks \u2014 similar to those developed through the Economic Community of West African States, which has helped align agricultural input regulations across multiple countries
