Hoje, sem o uso di\u00e1rio de surfactantes, cujo mercado anual gira em torno de 20 milh\u00f5es de toneladas m\u00e9tricas e 1,4 trilh\u00e3o de d\u00f3lares, n\u00e3o existiria a civiliza\u00e7\u00e3o moderna como a conhecemos.<\/p>\n

Na d\u00e9cada de 1930, no entanto, os chamados surfactantes sint\u00e9ticos, baseados em cadeias alqu\u00edlicas petroqu\u00edmicas, impulsionaram o crescimento dessa classe de ingredientes qu\u00edmicos, levando-os a quase todas as \u00e1reas de atividade que sustentam a vida civilizada como a conhecemos, incluindo a agricultura.<\/p>\n

A cadeia de suprimentos de surfactantes se baseia em dois pilares: petr\u00f3leo e g\u00e1s e planta\u00e7\u00f5es de palma.<\/p>\n

Pelo menos cerca de 90% da massa de surfactantes prov\u00e9m desses dois pontos de partida. A ind\u00fastria petroqu\u00edmica \u00e9 fundamental para os surfactantes, fornecendo mat\u00e9rias-primas essenciais como etileno, benzeno, parafinas e enxofre am\u00f4nia, conforme ilustrado na Figura 1.<\/p>\n

A principal contribui\u00e7\u00e3o das planta\u00e7\u00f5es de palma \u00e9 mais espec\u00edfica, mas igualmente importante: o \u00f3leo de palmiste. Este \u00f3leo representa quase 101 TP3T da produ\u00e7\u00e3o total de \u00f3leo da planta\u00e7\u00e3o, e seu principal uso \u00e9 como mat\u00e9ria-prima para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de \u00e1lcoois detergentes \u00e0 base de oleoqu\u00edmicos, que s\u00e3o posteriormente etoxilados e\/ou sulfatados para a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de surfactantes. A Figura 2 ilustra isso.<\/p>\n

Duas tend\u00eancias que afetam o desenvolvimento e a aplica\u00e7\u00e3o de surfactantes<\/h2>\n

Regulamentos <\/strong><\/p>\n

A regulamenta\u00e7\u00e3o de surfactantes tornou-se muito mais ativa nos \u00faltimos anos. Em Nova York e na Calif\u00f3rnia, por exemplo, a restri\u00e7\u00e3o da contamina\u00e7\u00e3o por dioxano em produtos de consumo a 1 ppm teve um impacto significativo em toda a cadeia de suprimentos de etoxilatos e etoxisulfatos, exigindo investimentos em tecnologia de remo\u00e7\u00e3o por parte dos fabricantes de surfactantes e incentivando os usu\u00e1rios a buscarem alternativas qu\u00edmicas.<\/p>\n

O Regulamento Europeu sobre o Desmatamento exige um rastreamento e monitoramento dispendiosos e complexos dos insumos derivados do \u00f3leo de palma por parte dos fabricantes de surfactantes na UE e dos importadores para a UE. Isso teve o efeito de favorecer os produtos petroqu\u00edmicos em alguns casos.<\/p>\n

Cadeia de mantimentos<\/strong>
\nNos \u00faltimos 18 meses, a pr\u00f3pria cadeia de suprimentos foi afetada pela iminente escassez de parafinas normais para a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de alquilbenzeno linear, favorecendo produtores totalmente integrados como a Sasol e a Moeve.<\/p>\n

Do lado das palmas das m\u00e3os, existe agora a preocupa\u00e7\u00e3o com o amplo fornecimento de \u00f3leo de palmiste para abastecer quase 1 milh\u00e3o de toneladas m\u00e9tricas de capacidade adicional de produ\u00e7\u00e3o de \u00e1lcool para detergentes, prevista para entrar em opera\u00e7\u00e3o nos pr\u00f3ximos dois anos.<\/p>\n

Essas preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es j\u00e1 existiam antes do in\u00edcio do conflito entre os EUA e o Ir\u00e3, no final de fevereiro. Some-se a isso as press\u00f5es tarif\u00e1rias e as megatend\u00eancias de longo prazo relacionadas \u00e0 sustentabilidade em grande parte do mundo desenvolvido, e fica claro que a cadeia de suprimentos atual precisa de inova\u00e7\u00e3o cont\u00ednua para se manter vi\u00e1vel.<\/p>\n

Tend\u00eancias inovadoras<\/h2>\n

A inova\u00e7\u00e3o em surfactantes \u00e9 abundante e disseminada. Novos biossurfactantes, como soforolip\u00eddios e ramnolip\u00eddios obtidos por fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o, foram relatados e alguma produ\u00e7\u00e3o comercial j\u00e1 foi iniciada.<\/p>\n

No entanto, essas n\u00e3o s\u00e3o as \u00fanicas inova\u00e7\u00f5es importantes. Surfactantes de base biol\u00f3gica, derivados de carboidratos, j\u00e1 est\u00e3o comercialmente estabelecidos e causando impacto em diversos setores, inclusive na ind\u00fastria agroqu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n

As empresas tamb\u00e9m est\u00e3o trabalhando no uso de produtos de madeira como mat\u00e9ria-prima fundamental para novos surfactantes, e existem at\u00e9 mesmo iniciativas avan\u00e7adas para criar novos surfactantes a partir do di\u00f3xido de carbono extra\u00eddo do ar.<\/p>\n

\u00c9 importante perceber, no entanto, que o desenvolvimento qu\u00edmico exige tempo e dinheiro, e os surfactantes n\u00e3o s\u00e3o exce\u00e7\u00e3o. Num futuro pr\u00f3ximo, o maior mercado de surfactantes \u00e9 composto por derivados de petr\u00f3leo e de palma, que constituem os dois pilares que sustentam esse componente essencial de produtos de consumo e industriais. Um terceiro pilar, seja ele qual for, ainda est\u00e1 longe de ser desenvolvido.<\/p>\n
