Cientistas em Uganda criaram um novo centro de biotecnologia dedicado ao estudo da mandioca, de acordo com Not\u00edcias de Ci\u00eancia da \u00c1frica<\/a>O centro ficar\u00e1 sediado no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa de Recursos Agr\u00edcolas (NCRRI) e ser\u00e1 especializado na modifica\u00e7\u00e3o da mandioca.<\/p>\n

Com a ajuda da Associa\u00e7\u00e3o para o Fortalecimento da Pesquisa Agr\u00edcola na \u00c1frica Oriental e Central (Asareca), os cientistas lan\u00e7aram o projeto de capacidade biotecnol\u00f3gica da mandioca por meio do programa de Agrobiodiversidade e Biotecnologia do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa de Recursos Agr\u00edcolas (NCRRI) em abril.<\/p>\n

Dr. Charles Mugoya, um cientista s\u00eanior da Asareca<\/a>, afirmou que o fundo do projeto de $110.000 dos EUA faz parte do projeto de $320.000 que foi compartilhado entre os pa\u00edses Qu\u00eania, Tanz\u00e2nia e Uganda. Os pesquisadores ugandenses seguir\u00e3o os passos dos pesquisadores do Centro de Ci\u00eancias Vegetais Donald Danforh (DDPSC), nos EUA, que introduziram um gene geneticamente modificado em uma planta de mandioca para conferir resist\u00eancia \u00e0 Doen\u00e7a do Mosaico da Mandioca (CMD).<\/p>\n

A capacidade da mandioca de produzir alimentos em condi\u00e7\u00f5es prec\u00e1rias a tornou uma cultura popular entre os pobres da \u00c1frica. De fato, a mandioca \u00e9 a cultura mais consumida na \u00c1frica Oriental e Central, com mais de 30 milh\u00f5es de toneladas produzidas anualmente, segundo o Africa Science News. Em m\u00e9dia, o valor da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de mandioca entre 1961 e 1999 em Uganda foi de US$ 1 bilh\u00e3o (aproximadamente 4 bilh\u00f5es de t\/t).<\/p>\n

A CMD e a doen\u00e7a da podrid\u00e3o radicular da mandioca s\u00e3o as principais restri\u00e7\u00f5es que afetam a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de mandioca em Uganda e na maior parte da \u00c1frica.
