As mulheres representam 90% de todos os capinadores manuais e dedicam quase metade do seu tempo ao trabalho exigente. A literatura cient\u00edfica tem consistentemente documentado que os herbicidas controlariam as ervas daninhas de forma mais eficaz, levando a uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 90% na remo\u00e7\u00e3o manual de ervas daninhas e oportunidades para mulheres agricultoras buscarem oportunidades educacionais, comerciais e familiares adicionais. O CPRI emitiu uma estimativa conservadora de que o uso de herbicidas reduziria o trabalho de remo\u00e7\u00e3o manual de ervas daninhas em 24 bilh\u00f5es de horas e resultaria em um aumento de 40 milh\u00f5es de toneladas na produtividade da colheita.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO impacto do problema das ervas daninhas na \u00c1frica tem sido negligenciado porque a remo\u00e7\u00e3o de ervas daninhas \u00e9 muitas vezes vista como um trabalho de pouca import\u00e2ncia\u201d, disse Leonard Gianessi, diretor do CPRI e autor do relat\u00f3rio. \u201cGrandes investimentos est\u00e3o sendo feitos para melhorar sementes e promover o uso de fertilizantes por pequenos agricultores; no entanto, o potencial dessas tecnologias n\u00e3o ser\u00e1 alcan\u00e7ado sem resolver os efeitos de roubo de rendimento das ervas daninhas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O relat\u00f3rio tamb\u00e9m destaca os esfor\u00e7os atuais da ind\u00fastria para demonstrar o valor dos herbicidas e introduzir a tecnologia de herbicidas em pequenas fazendas. Como parte do projeto, a CLF fez parceria com a CNFA e v\u00e1rios desenvolvedores e fabricantes de produtos de prote\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivos. Essas organiza\u00e7\u00f5es plantaram parcelas de pesquisa no Malawi, Qu\u00eania e Tanz\u00e2nia, que atra\u00edram mais de 3.000 agricultores para testemunhar os resultados do uso de herbicidas em primeira m\u00e3o. As parcelas de milho tratadas com herbicidas produziram um aumento de 26% no rendimento da colheita, com uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 150 horas por hectare na remo\u00e7\u00e3o manual de ervas daninhas. Al\u00e9m disso, o custo dos herbicidas foi 50% menor do que o custo da m\u00e3o de obra de remo\u00e7\u00e3o manual de ervas daninhas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHerbicidas s\u00e3o registrados para uso na \u00c1frica e s\u00e3o amplamente usados por fazendeiros comerciais de larga escala, mas as fazendas de pequenos produtores foram negadas a escolha da tecnologia de herbicida devido a treinamento e educa\u00e7\u00e3o insuficientes\u201d, disse Jay Vroom, presidente da CLF. \u201cO \u00faltimo relat\u00f3rio do CPRI ajuda a educar e aumentar a conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o sobre esse problema negligenciado e ajuda a introduzir tecnologia de economia de trabalho em um momento em que a demanda por alimentos continua a aumentar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A DuPont Crop Protection, que participou dos lotes de teste, estava animada para ajudar a introduzir o uso de herbicidas aos agricultores. \u201cA DuPont tem uma longa hist\u00f3ria de levar herbicidas aos agricultores ao redor do mundo para ajudar a melhorar sua produtividade e lucratividade\u201d, disse Jim Collins, presidente da DuPont Crop Protection. \u201cA DuPont est\u00e1 muito satisfeita por ter um papel nos esfor\u00e7os da CLF na \u00c1frica para demonstrar aos pequenos agricultores o valor desta tecnologia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O relat\u00f3rio do CPRI recebeu apoio financeiro por meio da CropLife International (CLI), uma federa\u00e7\u00e3o global que representa a ind\u00fastria de ci\u00eancia vegetal.
