Duas das nossas not\u00edcias abaixo \u2014 aquelas sobre a rejei\u00e7\u00e3o da Fran\u00e7a \u00e0 sua \u00fanica variedade de milho biotecnol\u00f3gico permitida e a tentativa da Pol\u00f4nia de proibir completamente as culturas geneticamente modificadas (GM) \u2014 enviam uma mensagem clara de que o movimento anti-GM na Europa ainda tem bastante for\u00e7a. Estou, \u00e9 claro, falando de forma geral; estou ciente de que nem todos os UE<\/a>, nem mesmo todos nesses pa\u00edses em particular, se op\u00f5em \u00e0 biotecnologia. Mas a mensagem ainda \u00e9 clara: a postura popular contra os transg\u00eanicos \u00e9 mais forte na Europa do que em qualquer outro lugar do mundo.<\/p>\n

Discuti isso em primeira m\u00e3o com algumas pessoas de fora da agricultura que conheci em Bruxelas h\u00e1 v\u00e1rios anos, enquanto almo\u00e7ava em um pequeno restaurante. Embora esta seja apenas a opini\u00e3o de algumas pessoas e n\u00e3o deva ser interpretada como a vis\u00e3o de um pa\u00eds inteiro (ou de uma Uni\u00e3o de pa\u00edses), ela me deu uma ideia de como alguns europeus se sentem em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao tema.<\/p>\n

Na \u00e9poca, a regi\u00e3o havia acabado de se recuperar da Doen\u00e7a da Vaca Louca e j\u00e1 havia passado por mais do que sua cota de crises alimentares. Os medos persistentes em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 comida foram aproveitados pelos l\u00edderes do forte movimento ambientalista na Europa, e muitos fatos foram distorcidos.<\/p>\n

Seus argumentos eram razo\u00e1veis e, em sua maioria, cautelosos. No entanto, n\u00e3o eram totalmente razo\u00e1veis; perguntei-lhes se comeriam alimentos transg\u00eanicos se tivessem evid\u00eancias cient\u00edficas absolutas e concretas de que os produtos eram seguros \u2014 todos eles disseram que n\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

Menciono isso n\u00e3o para criticar suas opini\u00f5es; prefer\u00eancia do consumidor \u00e9 prefer\u00eancia do consumidor, ela ditar\u00e1 as regras, independentemente das motiva\u00e7\u00f5es por tr\u00e1s dela. Mas me parece que, \u00e0 medida que a lucratividade e os benef\u00edcios de produtividade das culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas s\u00e3o comprovados e reprovados a cada ano nas safras em pa\u00edses favor\u00e1veis aos transg\u00eanicos, \u00e9 prov\u00e1vel que se torne um empreendimento cada vez mais caro ser livre de transg\u00eanicos. E \u00e0 medida que a popula\u00e7\u00e3o cresce em todo o mundo e mais alimentos s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rios, isso tamb\u00e9m se tornar\u00e1 cada vez mais uma decis\u00e3o pol\u00edtica que est\u00e1 tirando comida da boca de algu\u00e9m. Simplificando, mais pessoas n\u00e3o podem comer para sempre na mesma (ou menos) terra sem melhorias na produ\u00e7\u00e3o. E as culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas demonstraram sua capacidade de melhorar a produ\u00e7\u00e3o. Quando s\u00e3o ignoradas por motivos pol\u00edticos, espero que esses consumidores, e os estados que patrocinam o sentimento anti-transg\u00eanicos, estejam cientes de que sua decis\u00e3o vai al\u00e9m de suas pr\u00f3prias mesas de jantar. H\u00e1 um mundo faminto e em crescimento l\u00e1 fora que tamb\u00e9m sente os efeitos.<\/p>\n
