A equipe de pesquisa ser\u00e1 composta por especialistas do VBI da Virginia Tech; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psu.edu\/\">Estado da Pensilv\u00e2nia<\/a>; e o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umd.edu\/\">Universidade de Maryland, College Park<\/a>, em colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com o especialista em cacau Brian Bailey da <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/\">Servi\u00e7o de Pesquisa Agr\u00edcola do Departamento de Agricultura dos EUA <\/a>em Beltsville, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>A pesquisa se concentrar\u00e1 no desenvolvimento de novas abordagens de prote\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivos contra uma ampla gama de doen\u00e7as causadas por fungos e pat\u00f3genos semelhantes a fungos, visando especificamente o cacau. Em muitos pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento, o cacau \u00e9 uma cultura econ\u00f4mica e ecologicamente importante. Aproximadamente tr\u00eas milh\u00f5es de toneladas de cacau, que \u00e9 feito de sementes de cacau, s\u00e3o produzidas anualmente em todo o mundo, de acordo com a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icco.org\/\">Organiza\u00e7\u00e3o Internacional do Cacau<\/a>. Mais de 90% da produ\u00e7\u00e3o global de cacau vem de pequenas fazendas.<\/p>\n<p>Os rendimentos do cacau podem ser limitados por doen\u00e7as da planta causadas por pat\u00f3genos f\u00fangicos e de mofo aqu\u00e1tico (oomiceto). A pesquisa principal tem como alvo dois dos mecanismos dos pat\u00f3genos para infectar a planta. Primeiro, a equipe explorar\u00e1 a utilidade de uma prote\u00edna antimicrobiana para atingir e prejudicar a infec\u00e7\u00e3o dentro das partes de alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o (haust\u00f3rios) do pat\u00f3geno. Segundo, os pesquisadores tentar\u00e3o bloquear a entrada de prote\u00ednas de virul\u00eancia que os pat\u00f3genos secretam nas c\u00e9lulas hospedeiras para causar doen\u00e7as.
