Essas perdas s\u00e3o devastadoras em uma regi\u00e3o onde quatro em cada cinco pessoas dependem da agricultura para alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o, renda e emprego. At\u00e9 o final do projeto em 2014, os organizadores estimam que mais de 250.000 agricultores individuais ter\u00e3o potencialmente at\u00e9 50% maiores rendimentos de milho (2,25 toneladas\/ha) e 100% maiores rendimentos de feij\u00e3o-fradinho (mais de 1 t\/ha), de acordo com o comunicado.<\/p>\n<p>O financiamento para o projeto vem de uma bolsa de quatro anos da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Bill &amp; Melinda Gates para o IITA para implementar e avaliar quatro abordagens diferentes para controlar a erva daninha parasita. Ap\u00f3s um per\u00edodo de avalia\u00e7\u00e3o de dois anos, o projeto ampliar\u00e1 as abordagens mais eficazes e trabalhar\u00e1 para promov\u00ea-las ainda mais. A BASF est\u00e1 fazendo uma doa\u00e7\u00e3o em esp\u00e9cie de recursos de pesquisa e desenvolvimento e tamb\u00e9m est\u00e1 fornecendo acesso \u00e0 tecnologia para seu sistema de produ\u00e7\u00e3o StrigAway para dar suporte ao desenvolvimento e teste de uma abordagem, de acordo com a empresa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIniciativas anteriores usaram abordagens de bala \u00fanica, como capina manual ou herbicidas convencionais\u201d, disse o Dr. Alpha Kamara, gerente de projeto em exerc\u00edcio e agr\u00f4nomo de sistemas do IITA em uma declara\u00e7\u00e3o preparada. \u201cA iniciativa atual usa diversas tecnologias de forma integrada. A tecnologia da BASF \u00e9 uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o potencial porque ataca essa erva daninha parasita onde ela vive e cresce: no subsolo.
