O novo m\u00e9todo, apelidado de \u201cFIGS\u201d \u2013 abrevia\u00e7\u00e3o de \u201cFocus Identification of Germplasm Strategy\u201d \u2013 usa matem\u00e1tica e informa\u00e7\u00f5es geogr\u00e1ficas para localizar rapidamente caracter\u00edsticas \u00fateis que podem ajudar a produzir novas variedades de culturas com resist\u00eancia \u00e0 seca, geada, pragas e doen\u00e7as.<\/p>\n<p>O Centro Internacional de Pesquisa Agr\u00edcola em \u00c1reas Secas (ICARDA), sediado em Aleppo, diz que agora est\u00e1 trabalhando para disseminar a pr\u00e1tica entre a comunidade cient\u00edfica global. Comparado aos m\u00e9todos cl\u00e1ssicos de triagem em larga escala, onde &quot;encontrar amostras candidatas com a caracter\u00edstica desej\u00e1vel \u00e9 um pouco como procurar uma agulha em um palheiro&quot;, a abordagem FIGS se concentra na \u00e1rea que ela perfilou ambientalmente de forma completa para capturar genes de resist\u00eancia, diz Ken Street, cientista-chefe da equipe.<\/p>\n<p>Uma hist\u00f3ria de sucesso da FIGS at\u00e9 agora \u00e9 a busca por tipos de trigo-p\u00e3o com resist\u00eancia ao inseto Sunn Pest, que causa enormes perdas para as planta\u00e7\u00f5es na \u00c1sia Central e Ocidental e no Norte da \u00c1frica. A equipe da FIGS identificou 12 acessos resistentes, que agora est\u00e3o sendo usados no programa de melhoramento ICARDA, e est\u00e3o dispon\u00edveis mediante solicita\u00e7\u00e3o. &quot;As pessoas t\u00eam procurado esse gene por 10 anos e n\u00f3s o encontramos em uma temporada&quot;, diz Street.<\/p>\n<p>Outro exemplo \u00e9 a resist\u00eancia ao pulg\u00e3o russo do trigo s\u00edrio. \u201cEsta \u00e9 uma praga particularmente virulenta e n\u00e3o havia nenhuma resist\u00eancia a ela. Fizemos a coisa do FIGS, observando ambientes que provavelmente favorecem altas cargas de pragas e encontramos 10 fontes de resist\u00eancia em novos genes. Ent\u00e3o est\u00e1 funcionando\u201d, ele diz.<\/p>\n<p>A ferramenta tamb\u00e9m foi aplicada com sucesso \u00e0 resist\u00eancia \u00e0 ferrugem do colmo do trigo, e o material selecionado pela FIGS foi solicitado por mais de 20 institutos de pesquisa de cultivos ao redor do mundo.
