O artigo faz parte de uma se\u00e7\u00e3o especial da PNAS sobre mitiga\u00e7\u00e3o clim\u00e1tica e produtividade agr\u00edcola nos tr\u00f3picos.<\/p>\n<p>A capacidade da natureza de armazenar carbono, o elemento que est\u00e1 no centro dos problemas clim\u00e1ticos globais, est\u00e1 diminuindo constantemente \u00e0 medida que os agricultores do mundo expandem suas terras de cultivo em detrimento de ecossistemas nativos, como florestas, de acordo com um comunicado \u00e0 imprensa emitido pela Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison.<\/p>\n<p>O dilema entre a produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola e a manuten\u00e7\u00e3o dos reservat\u00f3rios de carbono da natureza \u2013 \u00e1rvores nativas, plantas e seus detritos ricos em carbono no solo \u2013 est\u00e1 se tornando mais evidente \u00e0 medida que mais e mais ecossistemas naturais do mundo sucumbem \u00e0 ara\u00e7\u00e3o. O problema, dizem os especialistas, \u00e9 mais agudo nos tr\u00f3picos, onde a expans\u00e3o da agricultura frequentemente ocorre \u00e0s custas das florestas tropicais, que atuam como enormes sumidouros de carbono devido \u00e0 sua rica diversidade e abund\u00e2ncia de vida vegetal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnalisamos as compensa\u00e7\u00f5es entre o armazenamento de carbono e a produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola com um n\u00edvel de detalhe nunca antes poss\u00edvel\u201d, afirma Stephen Carpenter, um dos autores seniores do estudo e professor do Centro de Limnologia da Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison. \u201cA principal novidade \u00e9 que a produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola por meio do desmatamento nos tr\u00f3picos libera muitos gases de efeito estufa por unidade de alimento produzido.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com as regi\u00f5es temperadas do mundo, os tr\u00f3picos liberam quase o dobro de carbono para a atmosfera para cada unidade de terra desmatada, explica Paul C. West, estudante de p\u00f3s-gradua\u00e7\u00e3o da Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison e principal autor do novo estudo. &quot;As florestas tropicais armazenam uma quantidade enorme de carbono e, quando uma floresta \u00e9 desmatada, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 se perde mais carbono, como a produtividade das colheitas n\u00e3o \u00e9 t\u00e3o alta quanto em \u00e1reas temperadas.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsso cria uma esp\u00e9cie de &#039;duplo golpe&#039; para grande parte da agricultura tropical: precisamos limpar ecossistemas ricos em carbono para criar terras de cultivo tropicais, e infelizmente elas frequentemente apresentam produtividade menor do que os sistemas temperados\u201d, afirma Jonathan Foley, diretor do Instituto do Meio Ambiente da Universidade de Minnesota e coautor do estudo. \u201cEm termos de equilibrar as necessidades da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de alimentos e reduzir as emiss\u00f5es de di\u00f3xido de carbono, essa \u00e9 uma compensa\u00e7\u00e3o dif\u00edcil.\u201d<br \/> Nos tr\u00f3picos, por exemplo, estima-se que, para cada tonelada de produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola, os estoques de carbono diminuam em at\u00e9 75 toneladas. Tal desgaste, afirmam West e seus colegas, justifica fortemente a intensifica\u00e7\u00e3o da agricultura em terras j\u00e1 convertidas, em vez de colocar novos campos em produ\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUm caminho \u00e9 expandir as terras agr\u00edcolas\u201d, diz West. \u201cO outro caminho \u00e9 intensificar a agricultura nas terras existentes. A realidade \u00e9 que haver\u00e1 um pouco de ambos.\u201d<br \/> Atualmente, cerca de 20% das terras em regi\u00f5es temperadas s\u00e3o terras cultiv\u00e1veis. Nos tr\u00f3picos, 11% das terras s\u00e3o cultivadas. Os processos humanos, em particular a agricultura, aceleram esse processo ao converter rapidamente os estoques de carbono em \u00e1rvores, outras plantas e no solo em di\u00f3xido de carbono, o principal g\u00e1s de efeito estufa.<br \/> Os estoques globais de carbono, observa West, podem ser an\u00e1logos a uma conta corrente: &quot;A matem\u00e1tica \u00e9 bem simples. Quando voc\u00ea desmata uma floresta, \u00e9 como fazer um grande saque da conta corrente.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>O novo estudo utilizou uma combina\u00e7\u00e3o de dados de sat\u00e9lite e relat\u00f3rios governamentais para determinar a extens\u00e3o do cultivo de 175 plantas cultivadas diferentes em todo o mundo. <br \/> As estimativas dos estoques globais de carbono na vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o natural, obtidas de um relat\u00f3rio recente do Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudan\u00e7as Clim\u00e1ticas (IPCC), foram baseadas em medi\u00e7\u00f5es de campo e calculadas em m\u00e9dia de acordo com o tipo de vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o, clima e continente.
