Com a adi\u00e7\u00e3o de Bangladesh, um total de 28 pa\u00edses cultivaram culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas durante o ano. Os 20 pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento e os oito pa\u00edses industrializados onde as culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas s\u00e3o produzidas representam mais de 601 TP3T da popula\u00e7\u00e3o mundial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA \u00e1rea acumulada de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas cultivadas entre 1996 e 2014 equivale, aproximadamente, a 80% a mais do que a \u00e1rea total da China\u201d, afirmou Clive James, fundador do ISAAA e autor do relat\u00f3rio. \u201cA \u00e1rea global aumentou mais de 100 vezes desde os primeiros plantios de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Desde 1996, mais de 10 culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas para alimentos e fibras foram aprovadas e comercializadas em todo o mundo. Essas culturas abrangem desde commodities importantes, como milho, soja e algod\u00e3o, at\u00e9 frutas e hortali\u00e7as como mam\u00e3o, berinjela e, mais recentemente, batata. As caracter\u00edsticas dessas culturas abordam quest\u00f5es comuns que afetam os benef\u00edcios das culturas para o consumidor e as taxas de produ\u00e7\u00e3o para os agricultores, incluindo toler\u00e2ncia \u00e0 seca, resist\u00eancia a insetos e doen\u00e7as, toler\u00e2ncia a herbicidas e aumento da nutri\u00e7\u00e3o e da qualidade dos alimentos. As culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas contribuem para sistemas de produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola mais sustent\u00e1veis e fornecem respostas resilientes aos desafios das mudan\u00e7as clim\u00e1ticas.<\/p>\n<p>De acordo com o relat\u00f3rio, os Estados Unidos continuam liderando a produ\u00e7\u00e3o, com 73,1 milh\u00f5es de hectares. Com um aumento de 3 milh\u00f5es de hectares \u2013 uma taxa de crescimento de 4% \u2013 em rela\u00e7\u00e3o a 2013, os Estados Unidos registraram o maior aumento anual, superando o Brasil, que registrou o maior aumento anual nos \u00faltimos cinco anos.<\/p>\n<p>O relat\u00f3rio tamb\u00e9m destacou os principais benef\u00edcios da biotecnologia, incluindo o al\u00edvio da pobreza e da fome, aumentando a renda de pequenos agricultores, avessos ao risco e com poucos recursos, em todo o mundo. As informa\u00e7\u00f5es provis\u00f3rias globais mais recentes, referentes ao per\u00edodo de 1996 a 2013, mostram que as culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas aumentaram a produ\u00e7\u00e3o em $133 bilh\u00f5es; no per\u00edodo de 1996 a 2012, o uso de pesticidas diminuiu significativamente, economizando aproximadamente 500 milh\u00f5es de kg de ingrediente ativo. Somente em 2013, o plantio de culturas reduziu as emiss\u00f5es de di\u00f3xido de carbono, o equivalente \u00e0 retirada de 12,4 milh\u00f5es de carros das ruas em um ano.<\/p>\n<p>Essas descobertas s\u00e3o consistentes com uma meta-an\u00e1lise rigorosa, conduzida pelos economistas alem\u00e3es, Klumper e Qaim (2014), que concluiu que a tecnologia GM reduziu, em m\u00e9dia, o uso de pesticidas qu\u00edmicos em 37%, aumentou a produtividade das colheitas em 22% e aumentou os lucros dos agricultores em 68% durante o per\u00edodo de 20 anos de 1995 a 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bangladesh: um modelo de sucesso<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Um dos pa\u00edses mais pequenos e mais pobres do mundo, Bangladesh aprovou <em>Bt<\/em> berinjela\/berinjela em outubro de 2013. Menos de 100 dias ap\u00f3s a aprova\u00e7\u00e3o, a comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o come\u00e7ou em janeiro de 2014, quando 120 agricultores plantaram 12 hectares da cultura ao longo do ano. <em>Bt <\/em>berinjela\/berinjela n\u00e3o s\u00f3 traz oportunidades financeiras para agricultores pobres do pa\u00eds, mas tamb\u00e9m diminui drasticamente a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o dos agricultores a pesticidas nas culturas alimentares em 70% para 90%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA aprova\u00e7\u00e3o e comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o atempada de <em>Bt<\/em> &quot;A berinjela em Bangladesh demonstra o poder da vontade pol\u00edtica e do apoio do governo&quot;, disse James. &quot;Isso estabelece a base para um modelo de sucesso para outros pa\u00edses pequenos e pobres introduzirem rapidamente os benef\u00edcios das culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>O caso do Bangladesh em 2014 reconfirma o valor e o sucesso das parcerias p\u00fablico-privadas. <em>Bt<\/em> A caracter\u00edstica biotecnol\u00f3gica da berinjela \u2013 um dos vegetais mais nutritivos e importantes de Bangladesh \u2013 foi doada pela Mahyco, uma empresa indiana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs parcerias p\u00fablico-privadas continuam a aumentar a probabilidade de entrega pontual de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas aprovadas nas fazendas\u201d, disse James. \u201cElas continuar\u00e3o essenciais nos pr\u00f3ximos anos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O Projeto Milho Eficiente em \u00c1gua para a \u00c1frica (WEMA) \u00e9 outro exemplo de parceria p\u00fablico-privada em a\u00e7\u00e3o. A partir de 2017, pa\u00edses africanos selecionados receber\u00e3o o primeiro milho biotecnol\u00f3gico tolerante \u00e0 seca, um alimento b\u00e1sico do qual mais de 300 milh\u00f5es de africanos pobres dependem. A caracter\u00edstica biotecnol\u00f3gica doada \u00e9 a mesma da variedade DroughtGard da Monsanto, usada nos Estados Unidos, cuja \u00e1rea plantada aumentou 5,5 vezes entre 2013 e 2014. Isso demonstra a forte aceita\u00e7\u00e3o do milho biotecnol\u00f3gico tolerante \u00e0 seca pelos agricultores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Novas aprova\u00e7\u00f5es abordam preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es do consumidor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nos Estados Unidos, a aprova\u00e7\u00e3o da batata Innate da Simplot foi concedida em novembro de 2014. A batata Innate reduz a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de acrilamida, um potencial carcin\u00f3geno, quando cozida em altas temperaturas. Al\u00e9m disso, aumenta a satisfa\u00e7\u00e3o do consumidor e evita perdas de rendimento de at\u00e9 40%, j\u00e1 que a batata n\u00e3o descolore ao ser descascada e apresenta menos manchas roxas. Esses atributos ter\u00e3o um impacto significativo na seguran\u00e7a alimentar, visto que o desperd\u00edcio de alimentos continua sendo um fator importante na discuss\u00e3o sobre a alimenta\u00e7\u00e3o de 9,6 bilh\u00f5es de pessoas em 2050 e aproximadamente 11 bilh\u00f5es em 2100.<\/p>\n<p>A batata representa o quarto alimento b\u00e1sico mais importante do mundo. Por isso, esfor\u00e7os cont\u00ednuos est\u00e3o sendo feitos para melhor\u00e1-la e combater perdas devido a doen\u00e7as, insetos, ervas daninhas e outras restri\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n<p>O controle biotecnol\u00f3gico da requeima, a doen\u00e7a f\u00fangica mais importante da batata no mundo, j\u00e1 est\u00e1 sendo testado em campo em Bangladesh, \u00cdndia e Indon\u00e9sia. A requeima causou a fome irlandesa de 1845, que resultou em 1 milh\u00e3o de mortes. O controle biotecnol\u00f3gico de doen\u00e7as virais e do besouro-do-colorado, a praga de insetos mais importante, j\u00e1 est\u00e1 dispon\u00edvel, mas n\u00e3o implementado.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situa\u00e7\u00e3o das culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas na \u00c1sia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Na \u00c1sia, a China e a \u00cdndia continuam liderando os pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento no cultivo de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas, com 3,9 milh\u00f5es de hectares e 11,6 milh\u00f5es de hectares plantados em 2014, respectivamente.<\/p>\n<p>A taxa de ado\u00e7\u00e3o do algod\u00e3o biotecnol\u00f3gico na China aumentou de 901 TP3T para 931 TP3T em 2014, enquanto o plantio de mam\u00e3o papaia resistente a v\u00edrus aumentou aproximadamente 501 TP3T. Mais de 7 milh\u00f5es de pequenos agricultores no pa\u00eds continuam a se beneficiar das culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas, e os dados econ\u00f4micos mais recentes dispon\u00edveis indicam que os agricultores do pa\u00eds ganharam 1 TP4T!6,2 bilh\u00f5es desde a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o da biotecnologia em 1996.<\/p>\n<p>De acordo com o relat\u00f3rio, a \u00cdndia cultivou um recorde de 11,6 milh\u00f5es de hectares de <em>Bt <\/em>algod\u00e3o com uma taxa de ado\u00e7\u00e3o de 95%. Os economistas brit\u00e2nicos Brookes e Barfoot estimam que a \u00cdndia aumentou a renda agr\u00edcola de <em>Bt<\/em> algod\u00e3o em $ 2,1 bilh\u00f5es somente em 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Os pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento Vietn\u00e3 e Indon\u00e9sia concederam aprova\u00e7\u00e3o para a comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas a partir de 2015. Isso inclui v\u00e1rios h\u00edbridos de milho biotecnol\u00f3gico para importa\u00e7\u00e3o e plantio no Vietn\u00e3 e cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar tolerante \u00e0 seca para plantio como cultura alimentar na Indon\u00e9sia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O crescimento continua na \u00c1frica e na Am\u00e9rica Latina<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Com 2,7 milh\u00f5es de hectares cultivados em 2014, a \u00c1frica do Sul \u00e9 o principal pa\u00eds em desenvolvimento a cultivar culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas na \u00c1frica. O Sud\u00e3o aumentou <em>Bt<\/em> a \u00e1rea plantada com algod\u00e3o aumentou aproximadamente 50% em 2014 e v\u00e1rios pa\u00edses africanos, incluindo Camar\u00f5es, Egito, Gana, Qu\u00eania, Malawi, Nig\u00e9ria e Uganda, conduziram testes de campo em diversas culturas favor\u00e1veis aos pobres, incluindo as culturas alimentares arroz, milho, trigo, sorgo, banana, mandioca e batata-doce.<\/p>\n<p>Essas culturas podem contribuir para a resili\u00eancia e a sustentabilidade diante dos novos desafios das mudan\u00e7as clim\u00e1ticas.<\/p>\n<p>Na Am\u00e9rica Latina, o Brasil ficou em segundo lugar, atr\u00e1s apenas dos Estados Unidos, em culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas plantadas em 2014. Com 42,2 milh\u00f5es de hectares, isso representa um aumento de 5% em rela\u00e7\u00e3o a 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas impactam a seguran\u00e7a alimentar, a sustentabilidade e o meio ambiente<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De 1996 a 2013, as culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas aumentaram a produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola avaliada provisoriamente em $133 bilh\u00f5es; ajudaram a aliviar a pobreza de mais de 16,5 milh\u00f5es de pequenos agricultores e suas fam\u00edlias \u2013 mais de 65 milh\u00f5es de pessoas, coletivamente \u2013 algumas das pessoas mais pobres do mundo; e diminu\u00edram o impacto ambiental da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de alimentos e fibras, reduzindo o uso de pesticidas, aumentando a economia de terras e reduzindo as emiss\u00f5es de CO<sub>2<\/sub> emiss\u00f5es.<\/p>\n<p>Segundo Brooks e Barfoot, se os 441 milh\u00f5es de toneladas adicionais de alimentos, ra\u00e7\u00f5es e fibras produzidos por culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas entre 1996 e 2013 n\u00e3o tivessem sido produzidos, seriam necess\u00e1rios 132 milh\u00f5es de hectares adicionais de culturas convencionais para produzir a mesma tonelagem. Esse aumento necess\u00e1rio em hectares poderia ter implica\u00e7\u00f5es negativas para a biodiversidade e o meio ambiente, devido ao aumento da necessidade de hectares cultivados.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Em n\u00fameros<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Os Estados Unidos continuaram como o pa\u00eds l\u00edder com 73,1 milh\u00f5es de hectares, um aumento anual de 4%, equivalente a 3 milh\u00f5es de hectares.<\/li>\n<li>O Brasil ficou em segundo lugar pelo sexto ano consecutivo, aumentando sua \u00e1rea cultivada em 1,9 milh\u00e3o de hectares desde 2013.<\/li>\n<li>A Argentina manteve o terceiro lugar com 24,3 milh\u00f5es de hectares.<\/li>\n<li>\u00cdndia e Canad\u00e1 registraram 11,6 milh\u00f5es de hectares cada. A \u00cdndia teve uma taxa de ado\u00e7\u00e3o de 95% para algod\u00e3o biotecnol\u00f3gico.
