Entre os 14 homenageados est\u00e1 a cientista Mary-Dell Chilton, Ph.D., uma distinta bolsista cient\u00edfica da Syngenta e fundadora dos laborat\u00f3rios de pesquisa em biotecnologia da empresa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinha carreira em biotecnologia tem sido uma jornada emocionante e estou surpreso em ver o progresso que fizemos ao longo dos anos\u201d, disse o Dr. Chilton. \u201cMinha esperan\u00e7a \u00e9 que, por meio de descobertas como a minha e as descobertas que vir\u00e3o, seremos capazes de fornecer um futuro mais brilhante e melhor para as gera\u00e7\u00f5es que nos seguir\u00e3o.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O trabalho da Dra. Chilton com biotecnologia vegetal a levou a produzir a primeira planta transg\u00eanica em 1983 e mostrou que os genomas das plantas poderiam ser alterados com mais precis\u00e3o do que se pensava anteriormente. Seu trabalho no centro de pesquisa de biotecnologia da Syngenta eventualmente levou \u00e0 capacidade das plantas de resistir a insetos e doen\u00e7as, e tolerar condi\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais extremas. A Dra. Chilton recebeu recentemente o World Food Prize, o principal pr\u00eamio internacional que reconhece a qualidade, quantidade ou disponibilidade de alimentos no mundo.<\/p>\n<p>O NIHF foi estabelecido em 1973 e homenageia aqueles que conceberam, patentearam e aperfei\u00e7oaram avan\u00e7os tecnol\u00f3gicos e cient\u00edficos que levaram ao crescimento tanto para os Estados Unidos quanto para al\u00e9m.
