L\u00e1, a empresa desenvolveu os primeiros produtos OGM. Isso transformou a Monsanto de uma empresa qu\u00edmica industrial em uma empresa de biotecnologia. Os avan\u00e7os cont\u00ednuos podem fazer a Monsanto se transformar mais uma vez. &quot;Poder\u00edamos facilmente nos transformar em uma empresa de ci\u00eancia de dados no futuro&quot;, diz Fraley.<\/p>\n<p>Seja qual for o futuro da Monsanto, a itera\u00e7\u00e3o atual est\u00e1 ocupada criando novas ferramentas para produtores que buscam proteger suas planta\u00e7\u00f5es e melhorar seus rendimentos.<br \/>\n\u201cN\u00e3o acho que tenha havido um momento mais emocionante em termos de todos os elementos em nosso pipeline\u201d, diz ele.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstamos nos preparando para o que provavelmente ser\u00e1 nosso maior lan\u00e7amento de caracter\u00edstica biotecnol\u00f3gica com a soja Roundup Ready Xtend\u201d, diz Fraley. \u201cIsso dar\u00e1 aos agricultores os benef\u00edcios do Roundup Ready e do dicamba na mesma semente. Isso estar\u00e1 dispon\u00edvel tanto na soja quanto no algod\u00e3o a partir do ano que vem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>RNAi<\/strong><br \/>\nA tecnologia de RNAi tem sido a pr\u00f3xima grande novidade h\u00e1 v\u00e1rios anos. A espera, diz Fraley, est\u00e1 quase no fim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLan\u00e7aremos uma nova caracter\u00edstica de controle de insetos para a lagarta da raiz do milho\u201d, diz Fraley. O produto chamado SmartStax Pro far\u00e1 parte do pacote SmartStax. A tecnologia ser\u00e1 a primeira nova caracter\u00edstica de controle de insetos baseada na tecnologia RNAi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00c9 um mecanismo completamente diferente dos tra\u00e7os Bt\u201d, diz Fraley. \u201cIsso adicionar\u00e1 ainda um novo modo de a\u00e7\u00e3o e melhorar\u00e1 ainda mais o importante controle de vermes da raiz que os agricultores precisam em sua produ\u00e7\u00e3o de milho.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Por mais ben\u00e9fica que essa tecnologia de RNAi seja, h\u00e1 outra aplica\u00e7\u00e3o da tecnologia que pode ter um impacto ainda maior, diz Fraley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlguns anos atr\u00e1s, nossos cientistas descobriram que poder\u00edamos fabricar essas mol\u00e9culas de RNA fita dupla (dsRNA) e, usando sistemas de entrega apropriados, poder\u00edamos entregar o dsRNA e iniciar o processo de RNAi de modo que ele pudesse ser usado para controlar insetos topicamente, ou tamb\u00e9m fizemos demonstra\u00e7\u00f5es em que conseguimos coloc\u00e1-lo dentro de uma erva daninha ou planta e provocar uma resposta gen\u00e9tica espec\u00edfica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essa tecnologia ainda levar\u00e1 v\u00e1rios anos, mas quando chegar, fornecer\u00e1 aos produtores uma nova ferramenta para combater pragas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe muitas maneiras, \u00e9 constru\u00eddo sobre o conhecimento que temos de gen\u00f4mica e biotecnologia\u201d, diz Fraley. \u201cEle nos leva em uma dire\u00e7\u00e3o diferente. N\u00e3o \u00e9 um OGM. \u00c9 uma aplica\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00f3pica. Seria muito semelhante a qualquer outro tratamento biol\u00f3gico t\u00f3pico, seja pulverizando uma planta com um <em>Bt<\/em> prote\u00edna ou alguma outra fonte biol\u00f3gica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO legal sobre as mol\u00e9culas de dsRNA \u00e9 que elas est\u00e3o em todos n\u00f3s. \u00c9 uma maneira natural de todos os organismos vivos regularem seus genes. Isso inclui pessoas, plantas e pragas. \u00c9 bom ter um modo de a\u00e7\u00e3o muito novo para isso.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quando essa tecnologia estiver pronta, ela poder\u00e1 fornecer algumas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es muito pr\u00e1ticas para problemas existentes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstamos estudando como podemos usar o processo de RNAi para superar o desafio que os apicultores t\u00eam com o Dist\u00farbio do Colapso das Col\u00f4nias\u201d, diz Fraley. \u201cAs pessoas culparam e acusaram v\u00e1rios produtos ou pr\u00e1ticas agr\u00edcolas. A maioria dos cientistas diria que o culpado por tr\u00e1s do CCD \u00e9 o <em>Varroa<\/em> \u00e1caro. Esse \u00e1caro n\u00e3o s\u00f3 se prende \u00e0 abelha e drena sua hemolinfa, mas tamb\u00e9m infecta a abelha com v\u00edrus que acabam com ela.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO que conseguimos mostrar \u00e9 que podemos projetar mol\u00e9culas de dsRNA que interferem nos genes no <em>Varroa<\/em> \u00e1caro e no v\u00edrus, n\u00e3o t\u00eam efeito sobre a abelha, ent\u00e3o podemos alimentar a col\u00f4nia com uma dieta nutritiva que cont\u00e9m o dsRNA e ajudar a proteger a sa\u00fade da col\u00f4nia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tratamento de sementes<\/strong><br \/>\nNematoides s\u00e3o um problema quase onipresente para produtores ao redor do mundo. A Monsanto desenvolveu um composto \u2013 atualmente rotulado como MON 102100 \u2013 que ser\u00e1 desenvolvido em um nematicida para tratamento de sementes, diz Fraley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00c9 um \u00f3timo exemplo de uso da biologia e da gen\u00f4mica para descobrir um novo produto qu\u00edmico\u201d, ele diz. O produto foi o resultado da aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o pela Monsanto de uma pequena empresa chamada Divergence, que era uma ramifica\u00e7\u00e3o da Universidade de Washington em St. Louis. Os cientistas daquela empresa foram os primeiros a sequenciar o genoma do nematoide e, ent\u00e3o, desenvolver e testar inibidores que poderiam ser usados para tratar essas pragas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEm dois ou tr\u00eas anos, esperamos obter a aprova\u00e7\u00e3o final e ter um nematicida para tratamento de sementes\u201d, diz Fraley.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9 apenas um exemplo de como unir duas tecnologias pode levar a solu\u00e7\u00f5es aprimoradas. Embora a Monsanto n\u00e3o esteja mais buscando ativamente a Syngenta, essa mudan\u00e7a \u00e9 um exemplo de como a Monsanto est\u00e1 buscando explorar potenciais sinergias, de acordo com Fraley.<\/p>\n<p>Esse foi o principal motivador por tr\u00e1s da busca da Syngenta pela empresa, diz Fraley. O acesso a novas mol\u00e9culas ajudar\u00e1 os cientistas da Monsanto a criar novas inova\u00e7\u00f5es no n\u00edvel gen\u00e9tico.<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Micr\u00f3bios<\/strong><br \/>\nEm 2014, a Monsanto lan\u00e7ou a BioAg Alliance, uma colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com a Novozymes para alavancar a expertise de ambas as empresas para encontrar inova\u00e7\u00f5es revolucion\u00e1rias em solu\u00e7\u00f5es microbianas para agricultura. O esfor\u00e7o continua a crescer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstamos apenas no processo de testar em campo quase 2.000 cepas microbianas no campo e testando em ensaios replicados para milho e soja\u201d, diz Fraley. \u201cH\u00e1 muita empolga\u00e7\u00e3o sobre o espa\u00e7o microbiano e como os micr\u00f3bios interagem com a sa\u00fade do solo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essa empolga\u00e7\u00e3o, diz Fraley, vem de aprender como uma semente revestida com a cepa certa de micr\u00f3bio ajuda a planta a crescer e pode ajudar a proteg\u00ea-la contra pragas, doen\u00e7as e levar a um melhor rendimento.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovas ferramentas de sequenciamento de DNA nos permitem caracterizar os micr\u00f3bios no solo de forma ainda mais precisa e precisa\u201d, ele diz. \u201cNossas capacidades de teste de campo, muito semelhantes \u00e0 maneira como testar\u00edamos novas linhagens de melhoramento, est\u00e3o nos permitindo obter informa\u00e7\u00f5es em tempo real sobre ganhos de rendimento no campo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsso \u00e9 potencialmente muito interessante porque nos permite usar muitas dessas ferramentas biol\u00f3gicas b\u00e1sicas que aplicamos ao melhoramento de plantas e agora usamos essas ferramentas para identificar e selecionar micr\u00f3bios que podem aumentar o rendimento como tratamento de
