Voc\u00ea v\u00ea essa energia em eventos da ind\u00fastria\u201d, diz Rick Melnick, gerente global de marketing e marca da Valent BioScience (VBC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cE quando as empresas crescem\u201d, acrescenta Melnick, \u201celas t\u00eam mais dinheiro para gastar em P&amp;D\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>O boom de fus\u00f5es e aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es de produtos biol\u00f3gicos dos \u00faltimos anos &quot;afetou a P&amp;D em grande medida&quot;, diz Juergen Huff, que lidera o neg\u00f3cio de Cuidados Funcionais de Cultivos da BASF, que adquiriu a empresa americana de tratamento biol\u00f3gico de sementes Becker Underwood por $1,02 bilh\u00f5es no final de 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Para ilustrar, ele oferece alguns exemplos de novos produtos que a BASF est\u00e1 lan\u00e7ando para produtores em todo o mundo, incluindo seu novo biofungicida foliar Serifel. A BASF usou a tecnologia de formula\u00e7\u00e3o existente para reduzir as taxas de uso do produto aumentando as contagens de esporos \u2013 o \u201cingrediente ativo\u201d em termos biol\u00f3gicos, explica Huff. A empresa tamb\u00e9m fez \u201cgrande progresso\u201d em sua pesquisa de bioinseticida foliar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO prazo de validade est\u00e1 aumentando, a estabilidade est\u00e1 aumentando e estamos aumentando o n\u00famero de organismos vivos nesses produtos (biol\u00f3gicos)\u201d, diz Huff <em>FCI<\/em>. \u201c\u00c9 um casamento muito bom e produtivo entre os pipelines que sa\u00edram dos players menores e as ideias que entraram em um est\u00e1gio inicial da pesquisa avan\u00e7ada que voc\u00ea encontra nas grandes empresas de P&amp;D na agricultura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maiores investimentos em P&amp;D de empresas como Bayer CropScience, Novozymes e Monsanto BioAg, e BASF aceleraram o desenvolvimento de produtos, &quot;particularmente testes de campo e tamb\u00e9m triagem para descoberta de novos micr\u00f3bios&quot;, diz Pam Marrone, CEO e fundadora da Marrone Bio Innovations. Marrone diz que sua empresa continua a investir pesadamente em P&amp;D para dar suporte \u00e0 formula\u00e7\u00e3o e melhorias de processo de seus produtos existentes, Grandevo, Venerate e Regalia, e avan\u00e7ar seu pipeline. Seu novo nematicida microbiano est\u00e1 definido para um lan\u00e7amento em 2016, ela acrescenta.<\/p>\n<p>Quando se trata de timing e previs\u00e3o, a Sumitomo Chemical Co. talvez tenha superado todas elas, e colheu os benef\u00edcios. A gigante japonesa ignorou a vis\u00e3o outrora predominante de produtos biol\u00f3gicos como um &quot;substituto&quot; duvidoso para produtos qu\u00edmicos sint\u00e9ticos e abocanhou o neg\u00f3cio Ag Specialties da Abbott Laboratories, que se tornou a Valent BioSciences, em 2000 \u2014 uma d\u00e9cada antes de seus concorrentes come\u00e7arem sua blitz de fus\u00f5es e aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n<p>Desde o momento em que a VBC abriu as portas de sua unidade em Osage, Iowa, em junho passado \u2013 a primeira unidade de fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o biorracional constru\u00edda para esse fim no mundo \u2013 ela imediatamente entrou em overdrive tentando atender \u00e0 demanda imprevista. Pedidos de seu produto DiPel (<em>Bacilo thuringiensis <\/em>esp\u00e9cies.<em>kurstaki<\/em>), usado para controlar o andamento <em>Helicoverpa armigera<\/em> surto no Brasil, foi \u201c\u00e0s alturas\u201d, como diz Melnick.<\/p>\n<p>A planta $146 milh\u00f5es fornece a maioria dos produtos do l\u00edder biorracional derivados da fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o. A empresa agora est\u00e1 pensando seriamente em expandir seu portf\u00f3lio para biofungicidas, ele diz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA ind\u00fastria agr\u00edcola est\u00e1 mais receptiva \u00e0 no\u00e7\u00e3o de biorracionais do que nunca\u201d, diz Melnick. \u201cAntes, as pessoas tendiam a pensar nisso como uma proposta de um ou outro (produtos qu\u00edmicos convencionais ou biopesticidas), mas normalmente n\u00e3o \u00e9 para funcionar dessa forma. Os biorracionais funcionam melhor em um programa junto com os convencionais, onde cada um tem um papel e benef\u00edcios importantes\u201d, diz Melnick.<\/p>\n<p>Hoje, o codesenvolvimento de produtos biol\u00f3gicos e convencionais com o objetivo de trazer solu\u00e7\u00f5es para o mercado que funcionem juntas \u00e9 um dado adquirido. \u201cEssa \u00e9 uma mudan\u00e7a fundamental que voc\u00ea ver\u00e1 nos pr\u00f3ximos cinco anos, com (aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es biol\u00f3gicas por) Bayer, Syngenta, BASF... Elas est\u00e3o trazendo um portf\u00f3lio completo de solu\u00e7\u00f5es para o produtor\u201d, acrescenta Melnick.<\/p>\n<p>Um dos produtos que surgiram da integra\u00e7\u00e3o BASF-Becker Underwood este ano \u00e9 o Xanthion, um fungicida de sulco para milho que \u00e9 uma combina\u00e7\u00e3o qu\u00edmico-biofungicida.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ainda h\u00e1 espa\u00e7o para crescer <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O mercado de biopesticidas de $2 bilh\u00f5es est\u00e1 superando quase todos os outros segmentos na agricultura, com uma taxa de crescimento anual composta estimada em 17%, impulsionada por padr\u00f5es regulat\u00f3rios e de MRL mais rigorosos e um apetite constante por novos modos de a\u00e7\u00e3o devido \u00e0 resist\u00eancia de ervas daninhas e \u00e0s proibi\u00e7\u00f5es de neonicotinoides.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Olson, analista da Lux Research em Boston, diz que os gastos internos de P&amp;D das principais empresas agroqu\u00edmicas com produtos biol\u00f3gicos &quot;n\u00e3o s\u00e3o t\u00e3o impressionantes quanto seus gastos com aquisi\u00e7\u00f5es e inova\u00e7\u00e3o aberta&quot;, mas, de qualquer forma, elas est\u00e3o finalmente analisando seriamente o desenvolvimento de produtos biol\u00f3gicos para prote\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivos.<\/p>\n<p>Ainda \u00e9 cedo para produtos biol\u00f3gicos em termos de aten\u00e7\u00e3o leg\u00edtima de mercado de grandes players, ressalta Olson. Enquanto a grande maioria dos agroqu\u00edmicos convencionais vem de seis grandes empresas, s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rias quase 60 empresas de biopesticidas para fazer a maioria dos produtos biol\u00f3gicos hoje. Isso se deve em parte \u00e0 relativa juventude da ind\u00fastria, mas tamb\u00e9m \u00e0s barreiras significativamente menores de entrada para prote\u00e7\u00e3o biol\u00f3gica de cultivos em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com a convencional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCom or\u00e7amentos t\u00edpicos de P&amp;D para biopesticidas pr\u00f3ximos a 10% do de um sint\u00e9tico convencional, n\u00e3o \u00e9 de se admirar que empresas menores ainda consigam competir com as grandes\u201d, diz ela.<\/p>\n<p>Outro fator no fortalecimento dos pipelines biol\u00f3gicos: demanda do consumidor por org\u00e2nicos. As vendas de alimentos org\u00e2nicos e produtos n\u00e3o aliment\u00edcios somente nos Estados Unidos atingiram um recorde de $39,1 bilh\u00f5es em 2014, um aumento de 11,3% em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao ano anterior, de acordo com a Organic Trade Association. As vendas org\u00e2nicas agora se aproximam de uma fatia de 5% do mercado total de alimentos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA ind\u00fastria org\u00e2nica n\u00e3o seria capaz de crescer nessa taxa sem biopesticidas, n\u00e3o h\u00e1 d\u00favidas sobre isso\u201d, diz Melnick, que tamb\u00e9m preside a Biopesticides Industry Alliance. \u201c\u00c0 medida que a ind\u00fastria org\u00e2nica cresceu, vemos uma tonelada de produtores que est\u00e3o produzindo tanto convencionais quanto org\u00e2nicos. Um subproduto disso \u00e9 que os produtores ganharam experi\u00eancia com biopesticidas e encontraram maneiras de incorpor\u00e1-los tamb\u00e9m em \u00e1reas convencionais. \u00c9 um fen\u00f4meno global.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ganhos na Am\u00e9rica Latina, Europa e \u00cdndia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Am\u00e9rica Latina est\u00e1 vivenciando uma explos\u00e3o de crescimento em biopesticidas, e a P&amp;D naquela regi\u00e3o deve mudar mais para biopesticidas no futuro, diz Olson. \u201cDa mesma forma, os produtores europeus est\u00e3o se tornando mais limitados pela mudan\u00e7a na situa\u00e7\u00e3o regulat\u00f3ria na UE, sugerindo uma oportunidade para os biol\u00f3gicos fornecerem uma op\u00e7\u00e3o menos limitada para prote\u00e7\u00e3o de cultivos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Na \u00cdndia, os gastos do setor p\u00fablico em P&amp;D de produtos biol\u00f3gicos est\u00e3o aumentando, diz o Dr. Venkatesh Devanur, CEO da empresa de produtos biol\u00f3gicos Agri Life, sediada em Hyderabad, parte da SOM Phytopharma Limited. Os laborat\u00f3rios do Conselho Indiano de Pesquisa Agr\u00edcola s\u00e3o financiados pelos Minist\u00e9rios da Agricultura e Biotecnologia do pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsses laborat\u00f3rios est\u00e3o rastreando bons isolados de micr\u00f3bios, desenvolvendo dossi\u00eas de registro e oferecendo transfer\u00eancia de tecnologia para empresas do setor (pequenas e m\u00e9dias empresas).\u201d Um grande n\u00famero de PMEs agora est\u00e1 registrando produtos biol\u00f3gicos no pa\u00eds, ele diz.<\/p>\n<p>Em agosto, a Koppert, sediada na Holanda, abriu sua mais recente unidade de pesquisa em Hyderabad em uma joint venture com a empresa de Devanur para fabricar micr\u00f3bios para gerenciamento de pragas e doen\u00e7as e bioestimulantes para mercados locais e internacionais. Ela desenvolver\u00e1 solu\u00e7\u00f5es inovadoras com especialistas locais em P&amp;D.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA \u00cdndia e o Sul da \u00c1sia abrigam mais de 300 milh\u00f5es de consumidores de classe m\u00e9dia em ascens\u00e3o que agora aspiram ter alimentos sem res\u00edduos. Os fazendeiros querem restaurar a sa\u00fade do solo, ent\u00e3o pr\u00e1ticas agr\u00edcolas sustent\u00e1veis est\u00e3o sendo consideradas muito favoravelmente nesta parte do mundo\u201d, diz Devanur.<\/p>\n<p>De acordo com Huff, a BASF est\u00e1 desenvolvendo quase todos os seus produtos inoculantes biol\u00f3gicos para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es em mercados globais, com Am\u00e9rica Latina, Brasil e Argentina sendo os maiores entre eles, juntamente com a Am\u00e9rica do Norte. A Europa Oriental \u00e9 outra \u00e1rea onde est\u00e1 vendo oportunidades \u201cque n\u00e3o existiam h\u00e1 10 anos. O mercado de soja n\u00e3o vamos ignorar e \u00e9 importante para n\u00f3s\u201d, diz Huff.<\/p>\n<p>Ele acrescenta que com a crescente ado\u00e7\u00e3o da agricultura moderna na \u00c1sia, a BASF est\u00e1 buscando levar solu\u00e7\u00f5es biol\u00f3gicas, principalmente para a \u00cdndia e a China, \u201co mais r\u00e1pido
