(AVS), para desenvolver a tecnologia Optimum Haploid Value (OHV) que pode selecionar as variedades parentais ideais para melhoramento de plantas. Essa tecnologia est\u00e1 sendo concedida \u00e0 BTI e \u00e0 Cornell University por meio de uma licen\u00e7a n\u00e3o exclusiva e livre de royalties para uso sem fins lucrativos para dar suporte ao melhoramento da mandioca. A tecnologia OHV ser\u00e1 implementada no banco de dados Cassavabase (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cassavabase.org\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.cassavabase.org<\/a>), mantida no BTI, como parte do projeto NextGeneration Cassava Breeding (NextGen).<\/p>\n<p>NextGen \u00e9 uma parceria internacional que beneficia os centros de melhoramento do Instituto Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (IITA) e do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa de Culturas de Raiz (NRCRI) na Nig\u00e9ria, o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa de Recursos de Culturas (NaCRRI) em Uganda e o Instituto de Pesquisa Agr\u00edcola da Tanz\u00e2nia (TARI). O projeto liderado por Cornell \u00e9 financiado por uma bolsa de cinco anos de $25 milh\u00f5es da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Bill &amp; Melinda Gates e do Departamento para o Desenvolvimento Internacional do Reino Unido.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFazer o melhor uso da tecnologia agr\u00edcola \u00e9 essencial para alimentar o mundo em crescimento, e compartilhar a tecnologia OHV para melhorar os ganhos gen\u00e9ticos da mandioca \u00e9 um \u00f3timo exemplo do nosso desejo de fornecer solu\u00e7\u00f5es para agricultores ao redor do mundo\u201d, disse Steve Webb, L\u00edder de Desenvolvimento de Portf\u00f3lio de Tecnologia Externa e Propriedade Intelectual da Dow AgroSciences.<\/p>\n<p>Nenhum outro continente depende da mandioca para alimentar tantas pessoas quanto a \u00c1frica, onde, a cada dia, 500 milh\u00f5es de pessoas consomem essa raiz rica em amido e calorias como parte importante de sua dieta. Acelerar o melhoramento gen\u00e9tico da mandioca \u00e9 uma grande promessa para a \u00c1frica Subsaariana, j\u00e1 que os melhoristas normalmente levam quase uma d\u00e9cada para desenvolver uma nova variedade de mandioca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomos gratos \u00e0 Dow AgroSciences por disponibilizar o OHV para n\u00f3s, para que possamos compartilh\u00e1-lo com os criadores de mandioca na \u00c1frica, que de outra forma n\u00e3o teriam acesso a essa tecnologia\u201d, disse Lukas Mueller, Professor Associado do BTI. \u201cOs criadores e agricultores se beneficiar\u00e3o do uso do OHV para acelerar o desenvolvimento de variedades de mandioca de maior rendimento e resistentes a doen\u00e7as.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tecnologia OHV \u00e9 uma extens\u00e3o da sele\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00f4mica, uma abordagem que usa informa\u00e7\u00f5es gen\u00e9ticas e caracter\u00edsticas f\u00edsicas de variedades de plantas para prever as linhas parentais mais produtivas, levando assim \u00e0 melhoria acelerada da cultura. OHV pode encurtar os ciclos de melhoramento, fornecer avalia\u00e7\u00e3o precisa do desempenho da planta no est\u00e1gio de muda e dar aos melhoristas de plantas a capacidade de avaliar um n\u00famero muito maior de plantas sem a necessidade de cultiv\u00e1-las no ambiente alvo. Essa abordagem requer menos recursos, tornando-a mais sustent\u00e1vel e mais eficiente.
