Foto: CABI.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Antes considerada uma praga que assolava apenas a Am\u00e9rica do Norte e do Sul, a lagarta-do-cartucho (FAW) chegou \u00e0 \u00c1frica com for\u00e7a em 2016, provavelmente chegando \u00e0 Nig\u00e9ria por meio de produtos importados. Capaz de voar 100 km durante a noite e depositar 1.000 larvas em 10 dias, a lagarta-do-cartucho se espalhou pelo continente africano em dois anos, deixando apenas quatro pa\u00edses na \u00c1frica Subsaariana ainda sem relatar infesta\u00e7\u00f5es at\u00e9 mar\u00e7o de 2018: Eritreia, Lesoto, Maur\u00edcio e Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p>A lagarta-do-cartucho alimenta-se de mais de 80 culturas diferentes, incluindo milho, arroz, sorgo, cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar, vegetais e algod\u00e3o. Dentro do milho, um alimento b\u00e1sico essencial na \u00c1frica Subsaariana, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agribusinessglobal.com\/pt\/biopesticides\/africa-faces-annual-2bn-plus-maize-deficit-if-fall-armyworm-poorly-managed\/\">O Centro de Bioci\u00eancias Agr\u00edcolas Internacional (CABI) estima que a praga pode causar perdas<\/a> em 12 pa\u00edses-chave da \u00c1frica, de 8,3 milh\u00f5es a 20,6 milh\u00f5es de toneladas m\u00e9tricas de milho anualmente, amea\u00e7ando seriamente o suprimento de alimentos para at\u00e9 100 milh\u00f5es de pessoas somente nesses 12 pa\u00edses.<\/p>\n<h2>Situa\u00e7\u00e3o atual<\/h2>\n<p>A \u00faltima atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o mensal da USAID mostra que a LFM continua a ser um problema para o milho e outras culturas no sul e leste da \u00c1frica:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Em <strong>Eti\u00f3pia<\/strong>, a praga infestou 13% dos campos de milho plantados at\u00e9 o final de mar\u00e7o de 2018, com apenas 40% dos campos infestados recebendo alguma forma de tratamento qu\u00edmico ou meios culturais. Na safra de 2017, a FAW infestou mais de 24% dos 2,9 milh\u00f5es de hectares plantados com milho, com uma perda total de mais de 134.000 toneladas de safra no valor de quase $30 milh\u00f5es. Este surto afetou milh\u00f5es de pequenos agricultores em todo o pa\u00eds e levou o Governo da Eti\u00f3pia a priorizar a implementa\u00e7\u00e3o do plano de trabalho da FAW de 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Em <strong>Sud\u00e3o do Sul<\/strong>A FAW foi detectada em planta\u00e7\u00f5es de milho precoces no Estado de Western Equatorial no final de mar\u00e7o de 2018, e a praga deve continuar aparecendo em vastas \u00e1reas do pa\u00eds \u00e0 medida que o plantio avan\u00e7a.<\/li>\n<li>Em <strong>Qu\u00eania<\/strong>, Surtos de FAW foram relatados nos condados de Kericho, Nyeri, Embu, Nakuru e Meru, atacando milho plantado cedo. Opera\u00e7\u00f5es de controle foram lan\u00e7adas pelos agricultores afetados.<\/li>\n<li>Em <strong>Tanz\u00e2nia<\/strong>, a praga foi registrada na maioria das regi\u00f5es do pa\u00eds e opera\u00e7\u00f5es de controle est\u00e3o sendo realizadas pelos agricultores afetados com assist\u00eancia t\u00e9cnica e material do Minist\u00e9rio da Agricultura.<\/li>\n<li>Em <strong>Som\u00e1lia<\/strong>, A LFM j\u00e1 foi relatada em sorgo irrigado neste ano agr\u00edcola.<\/li>\n<li>Em <strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Madag\u00e1scar<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">A FAW foi relatada pela primeira vez em novembro de 2017. A FAO enviou uma equipe de avalia\u00e7\u00e3o no in\u00edcio de mar\u00e7o de 2018 para conduzir avalia\u00e7\u00f5es e fornecer treinamento.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Previs\u00e3o<\/h2>\n<p>A FAW continuar\u00e1 sendo uma amea\u00e7a ao milho irrigado e de sequeiro e outras culturas em v\u00e1rias regi\u00f5es da \u00c1frica durante as pr\u00f3ximas seis semanas. Fonte: Gro-Intelligence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Para a temporada de 2018, combina\u00e7\u00f5es de precipita\u00e7\u00e3o, clima quente e vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o verde devem ser observadas de perto, pois essa mistura, aliada \u00e0 trajet\u00f3ria sazonal do vento, pode favorecer a reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o e facilitar a migra\u00e7\u00e3o e a dissemina\u00e7\u00e3o de pragas migrat\u00f3rias.<\/p>\n<p>O mapa \u00e0 direita mostra anomalias di\u00e1rias de precipita\u00e7\u00e3o em pa\u00edses selecionados no leste da \u00c1frica, com as \u00e1reas em azul recebendo significativamente mais chuva do que o normal, resultando em maior vulnerabilidade \u00e0 infesta\u00e7\u00e3o de LFM.<\/p>\n<p>As \u00e1reas sombreadas em vermelho podem ser menos suscet\u00edveis \u00e0 LFM devido \u00e0 redu\u00e7\u00e3o de chuvas, mas as \u00e1reas afetadas pela seca correm risco significativo de redu\u00e7\u00e3o de produtividade nesta temporada devido \u00e0 umidade inadequada.<\/p>\n<p>A vigil\u00e2ncia ativa, o monitoramento, a observa\u00e7\u00e3o de rotina e as interven\u00e7\u00f5es de controle continuam sendo essenciais para combater o potencial de grandes perdas de safras devido \u00e0 LFM.<\/p>\n<h2>Ferramentas para combater a invas\u00e3o da FAW<\/h2>\n<p>Embora a LFM seja uma praga h\u00e1 muito tempo na Am\u00e9rica do Norte e do Sul, os agricultores locais podem control\u00e1-la com o manejo integrado de pragas (MIP) e tecnologias como sementes geneticamente modificadas (GM) e inseticidas.<\/p>\n<p>Os pequenos agricultores africanos est\u00e3o enfrentando uma praga que \u00e9 nova para eles e est\u00e1 se espalhando rapidamente, e muitas vezes n\u00e3o t\u00eam acesso a informa\u00e7\u00f5es oportunas, treinamento e pesticidas seguros e eficazes. As ferramentas dispon\u00edveis consistem em rota\u00e7\u00e3o de culturas e inseticidas. Quando outras op\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o est\u00e3o dispon\u00edveis, alguns pequenos agricultores t\u00eam usado produtos naturais como \u00f3leo de nim, pimenta ou cinza de madeira com v\u00e1rios n\u00edveis de efic\u00e1cia.<\/p>\n<p>A CABI lan\u00e7ou recentemente um novo projeto que adota uma abordagem tripla de &quot;defender, detectar e derrotar&quot; para combater a FAW. Uma tecnologia push-pull que eles est\u00e3o testando com culturas forrageiras selecionadas, como desmodium de folhas verdes e capim-Napier, mostra alguns resultados positivos como parte da estrat\u00e9gia de &quot;derrota&quot;, mas essa pr\u00e1tica cultural n\u00e3o \u00e9 uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o imediata quando os insetos aparecem inesperadamente.<\/p>\n<p>A FAO desenvolveu um aplicativo m\u00f3vel para permitir que agricultores, extensionistas e outros parceiros ajudem a identificar e mapear a dissemina\u00e7\u00e3o da LFM na \u00c1frica, al\u00e9m de compartilhar medidas mais eficazes no gerenciamento e controle da praga.<\/p>\n<h2>Chamada para a\u00e7\u00e3o<\/h2>\n<p>Sistemas coordenados e hol\u00edsticos s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rios para reduzir a amea\u00e7a iminente, dada a invas\u00e3o surpreendentemente r\u00e1pida no continente africano, a possibilidade significativa de perda de alta produtividade e os fatores ambientais que favorecem as infesta\u00e7\u00f5es de LFM nesta temporada.<\/p>\n<p>O setor privado global, universidades e centros de pesquisa, funda\u00e7\u00f5es, organiza\u00e7\u00f5es da sociedade civil e outros parceiros de desenvolvimento s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rios para se juntar aos africanos para combater a FAW de forma eficaz. Produtores na Am\u00e9rica do Norte e do Sul controlam com sucesso a FAW usando uma s\u00e9rie de estrat\u00e9gias de MIP, incluindo resist\u00eancia convencional de plantas hospedeiras, biotecnologia, pesticidas e controle biol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n<p>O programa Feed the Future do governo dos EUA est\u00e1 procurando solu\u00e7\u00f5es digitais que possam ajudar a identificar e fornecer informa\u00e7\u00f5es acion\u00e1veis sobre como tratar a FAW na \u00c1frica e criou um concurso para premiar as melhores solu\u00e7\u00f5es.
