Uma vez que o biofilme \u00e9 formado, as bact\u00e9rias se tornam uma comunidade autossuficiente e auto-organizada, e produzem sua pr\u00f3pria matriz para permitir a transmiss\u00e3o de nutrientes e \u00e1gua, e a descarga de res\u00edduos.<\/p>\n<p>O projeto foi financiado pelo Conselho de Pesquisa em Biotecnologia e Ci\u00eancias Biol\u00f3gicas (BBSRC) por meio da Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Envolveu os alunos de doutorado Pavan Adoni e Omar Huneidi, que posteriormente progrediram na pesquisa mostrando que os pol\u00edmeros agregam bact\u00e9rias e melhoram a forma\u00e7\u00e3o de biofilme. Criticamente, eles tamb\u00e9m mostraram que o processo \u00e9 totalmente revers\u00edvel e o biofilme pode ser disperso alterando as condi\u00e7\u00f5es ambientais. Os resultados desses experimentos e estudos posteriores ser\u00e3o publicados em 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Pavan Adoni comentou: \u201cPrevemos que o pol\u00edmero ser\u00e1 usado como revestimento de sementes, talvez em conjunto com bact\u00e9rias como <em>B. Subtilis<\/em>, que est\u00e1 naturalmente presente no solo, aumenta a toler\u00e2ncia ao estresse das plantas e \u00e9 atualmente usado como um inoculante de solo. Prevemos uma abordagem mais direcionada que trate apenas a semente, de modo que, quando ela germinar, as bact\u00e9rias estejam prontas para crescer no ambiente de porto seguro fornecido por um complexo de pol\u00edmero de micro-organismos.
