A irriga\u00e7\u00e3o das culturas consome 80% do uso global de \u00e1gua doce. \u201cPara serem economicamente vi\u00e1veis e terem benef\u00edcios ambientais, as culturas usadas para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de bioenergia precisam ser cultivadas onde o suprimento de \u00e1gua \u00e9 insuficiente ou muito inconsistente para sustentar a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de culturas alimentares tradicionais\u201d, disse Baxter.<\/p>\n<p>Os rendimentos das culturas de bioenergia, como <em>Sorgo bicolor<\/em>, aumentaram por meio da cria\u00e7\u00e3o e da agronomia melhorada. A equipe se concentrar\u00e1 em tr\u00eas principais pontos de controle da produ\u00e7\u00e3o limitada por \u00e1gua: aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o aprimorada de \u00e1gua dispon\u00edvel pelas ra\u00edzes, uso reduzido de \u00e1gua atrav\u00e9s dos poros que as plantas usam para trocar \u00e1gua e CO<sub>2<\/sub>, e melhorar a assimila\u00e7\u00e3o de carbono fotossint\u00e9tico. O trabalho dentro do cons\u00f3rcio visa identificar os principais gargalos que afetam cada um desses processos e abord\u00e1-los por meio de abordagens de engenharia.<\/p>\n<p>A equipe trabalhar\u00e1 em paralelo com o sorgo e uma planta modelo intimamente relacionada, <em>Setaria viridis<\/em>, que \u00e9 menor e cresce mais r\u00e1pido para permitir testes r\u00e1pidos. Em ambas as esp\u00e9cies, gen\u00e9tica, gen\u00f4mica e bioinform\u00e1tica ser\u00e3o usadas para identificar novos genes que podem afetar os pontos de controle. Abordagens de biologia sint\u00e9tica ser\u00e3o desenvolvidas para controlar quando e onde na planta os genes s\u00e3o expressos, e a modelagem ser\u00e1 usada para determinar as melhores abordagens.
