Nas \u00faltimas duas d\u00e9cadas, essa hist\u00f3ria mudou. Liderados pelo Brasil e pela Argentina, os mercados da Am\u00e9rica do Sul rugiram em proemin\u00eancia entre os melhores produtores mundiais de v\u00e1rias culturas importantes. Agora armados com biotecnologia, parecia n\u00e3o haver como impedir esses pa\u00edses de se tornarem os maiores produtores de soja do mundo e de aumentar sua competitividade em milho e algod\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

Nos \u00faltimos anos, esse crescimento foi atrofiado quando a doen\u00e7a da ferrugem asi\u00e1tica da soja come\u00e7ou a paralisar os campos na Argentina e no Brasil. A perda de rendimento e as despesas adicionais trazidas pelos tratamentos com fungicidas reduziram o otimismo da regi\u00e3o.
