Essas informa\u00e7\u00f5es poder\u00e3o ajudar os cientistas a entender o que as plantas precisam para prosperar e, assim, melhorar o valor nutricional das culturas alimentares, fortalecer a capacidade das plantas de crescer em terras marginais ou reduzir a quantidade de fertilizantes necess\u00e1ria para o sucesso da produ\u00e7\u00e3o agr\u00edcola.<\/p>\n<p>A capacidade das plantas de obter e utilizar elementos \u00e9 uma fun\u00e7\u00e3o essencial da vida. Ela afeta como e onde elas podem crescer, bem como o qu\u00e3o nutritivas elas s\u00e3o para quem as consome. Pouco se sabe atualmente sobre os genes que facilitam esse processo. O projeto de Baxter pretende mudar isso.<\/p>\n<p>A proposta testa a hip\u00f3tese de que os genes respons\u00e1veis pela aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o elementar podem ser detectados por meio de sua conserva\u00e7\u00e3o evolutiva. A pesquisa utilizar\u00e1 conjuntos de dados de diversas popula\u00e7\u00f5es da planta modelo Arabidopsis e de plantas cultivadas como milho, sorgo, soja e arroz para identificar regi\u00f5es do genoma respons\u00e1veis pelo ac\u00famulo elementar. Ao procurar genes encontrados nessas regi\u00f5es em todas as esp\u00e9cies, os pesquisadores esperam encontrar novos genes que controlem a absor\u00e7\u00e3o elementar de forma imparcial. Se bem-sucedida, essa abordagem poder\u00e1 ser estendida a outras caracter\u00edsticas e a qualquer esp\u00e9cie que possa ser sequenciada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConhecemos apenas um pequeno n\u00famero de genes que impulsionam a acumula\u00e7\u00e3o de elementos\u201d, disse Baxter. \u201cPrecisamos de maneiras imparciais de identificar os outros genes para que possamos entender como as plantas se adaptam aos ambientes em que crescem. Saber quais genes est\u00e3o envolvidos pode permitir um melhor conte\u00fado de nutrientes nas culturas alimentares e reduzir a necessidade de fertilizantes na agricultura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toda esta pesquisa ser\u00e1 realizada de forma a fomentar o crescimento na comunidade cient\u00edfica. A pesquisa em bioinform\u00e1tica e gen\u00e9tica ser\u00e1 integrada \u00e0s salas de aula de gradua\u00e7\u00e3o da Universidade Hamline.
