H\u00e1 pouco debate sobre a principal hist\u00f3ria consensual dos \u00faltimos 20 anos.<\/strong> A biotecnologia redefiniu a ind\u00fastria, mudou a \u00eanfase das principais empresas, alterou os padr\u00f5es de cultivo, mudou o foco da pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P&D), causou alvoro\u00e7o entre lobistas e alterou as decis\u00f5es de insumos, para citar apenas alguns dos seus efeitos colaterais.<\/p>\n

Em seus 10 anos de hist\u00f3ria, a \u00e1rea global de biotecnologia expandiu-se a taxas de crescimento de dois d\u00edgitos a cada ano. Nesse per\u00edodo, dominou as planta\u00e7\u00f5es de soja em diversos pa\u00edses, com penetra\u00e7\u00e3o de quase 100% nos principais mercados sul-americanos do Brasil e da Argentina, gra\u00e7as ao sucesso de vendas Roundup Ready. O milho e o algod\u00e3o biotecnol\u00f3gicos tamb\u00e9m conquistaram o setor, em grande parte devido \u00e0 Bacilo thuringiensis <\/em>Caracter\u00edstica (Bt). O algod\u00e3o Bt tem sido t\u00e3o bem-sucedido na \u00cdndia que o pa\u00eds j\u00e1 registrou colheitas recordes consecutivas de algod\u00e3o, ap\u00f3s anos de luta contra infesta\u00e7\u00f5es de bicudo-do-algodoeiro.<\/p>\n

Nos pr\u00f3ximos anos, espera-se que as culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas mantenham seu crescimento. Olhando mais adiante e observando que alguns dos maiores benefici\u00e1rios da biotecnologia s\u00e3o e continuar\u00e3o sendo os agricultores dos pa\u00edses mais pobres do mundo, o Dr. Clive James, presidente do conselho de administra\u00e7\u00e3o da Servi\u00e7o Internacional para a Aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> de Aplica\u00e7\u00f5es da agrobiotecnologia <\/a>(ISAAA), diz: \u201cA perspectiva para 2010 aponta para um crescimento cont\u00ednuo na \u00e1rea global de cultivos biotecnol\u00f3gicos \u2013 at\u00e9 150 milh\u00f5es de hectares \u2013 com at\u00e9 15 milh\u00f5es de agricultores ou mais cultivando esses cultivos em at\u00e9 30 pa\u00edses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nem tudo foram flores para a ascens\u00e3o mete\u00f3rica da biotecnologia. Ao dominar t\u00e3o completamente algumas \u00e1reas, a biotecnologia desempenhou um papel no surgimento de ervas daninhas resistentes a herbicidas, particularmente no caso do glifosato. Tamb\u00e9m houve um esfor\u00e7o de lobby, mais fortemente sentido na UE, para impor limites ou proibi\u00e7\u00f5es definitivas de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas por grupos que as consideram arriscadas para o meio ambiente, para a biodiversidade ou para a sa\u00fade humana. Esse esfor\u00e7o s\u00f3 foi encorajado por uma s\u00e9rie de casos em que produtos de culturas biotecnol\u00f3gicas foram descobertos em mercados onde n\u00e3o deveriam estar. Al\u00e9m disso, discuss\u00f5es internacionais sobre taxas de licenciamento e royalties, bem como o replantio ilegal de sementes e a venda no mercado negro de sementes biotecnol\u00f3gicas para pa\u00edses que n\u00e3o as aceitaram para comercializa\u00e7\u00e3o, t\u00eam se intensificado na Am\u00e9rica do Sul e em outros mercados.<\/p>\n

Ainda assim, a promessa da ci\u00eancia \u00e9 vasta, e o mais not\u00e1vel \u00e9 o fato de que ela ainda est\u00e1 em seus prim\u00f3rdios. Estamos apenas agora entrando no que pode ser chamado de segunda gera\u00e7\u00e3o do movimento biotecnol\u00f3gico, que combina m\u00faltiplas caracter\u00edsticas "acumuladas" em uma \u00fanica semente para proporcionar maior benef\u00edcio ao agricultor.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
