Ela representa uma amea\u00e7a significativa \u00e0 seguran\u00e7a alimentar e aos meios de subsist\u00eancia. A praga afeta principalmente o milho, que \u00e9 a principal cultura comercial para milh\u00f5es de pequenos agricultores na \u00c1frica, mas tamb\u00e9m amea\u00e7a mais de 80 outras esp\u00e9cies de plantas.<\/p>\n<p>Os agricultores dependem principalmente de pesticidas sint\u00e9ticos, que s\u00e3o caros, e a maioria deles n\u00e3o foi considerada satisfat\u00f3ria para erradicar essa praga invasora. Essa inadequa\u00e7\u00e3o pode resultar da capacidade limitada de compra dos agricultores, levando-os a optar por produtos mais baratos, falta de conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o sobre op\u00e7\u00f5es adequadas, dificuldades em acessar produtos eficazes e um aumento no n\u00edvel de resist\u00eancia dos pesticidas a essa praga.<\/p>\n<p>Al\u00e9m disso, o uso excessivo desses produtos qu\u00edmicos pode ter efeitos adversos na qualidade dos alimentos, no meio ambiente e na seguran\u00e7a alimentar, exigindo uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o mais sustent\u00e1vel e ecologicamente correta.<\/p>\n<p>Em resposta a esses desafios, o projeto Plant Health Initiative, liderado pelo Dr. Ivan Rwomushana, cientista s\u00eanior de Gest\u00e3o de Esp\u00e9cies Invasoras do CABI, est\u00e1 auxiliando ativamente os agricultores a adotar abordagens mais seguras e sustent\u00e1veis para aumentar a produtividade de suas colheitas.<\/p>\n<p>Este apoio envolve forma\u00e7\u00e3o abrangente e testes de efic\u00e1cia de diferentes pesticidas, com enfoque principal no FAWLIGEN, um insecticida biol\u00f3gico baseado no <em>Esp\u00f3pteros<\/em> <em>frugiperda<\/em> nucleopoliedrov\u00edrus (SfMNPV) para o controle espec\u00edfico das larvas da lagarta-do-cartucho.<\/p>\n<p>Em julho deste ano, o CABI tamb\u00e9m estabeleceu duas fazendas experimentais de milho nas aldeias de Kitie e Itumbini, no
