Al\u00e9m disso, por meio de uma parceria africana com o One Acre Fund, eles pretendem atingir tr\u00eas milh\u00f5es de agricultores, fornecendo alimentos para mais de 100 milh\u00f5es de pessoas.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nos \u00faltimos 14 anos, tenho tido a miss\u00e3o de enfrentar uma das causas mais mortais de desnutri\u00e7\u00e3o e morte infantil do mundo: o milho. O milho est\u00e1 em toda parte na \u00c1frica e na Mesoam\u00e9rica. \u00c9 produtivo, f\u00e1cil de cultivar e normalmente o alimento mais barato. Tem sido o alimento b\u00e1sico em ambas as regi\u00f5es por s\u00e9culos e mil\u00eanios. Hoje, ele alimenta 1,2 bilh\u00e3o de pessoas.<\/p>\n

Infelizmente, o milho n\u00e3o tem os nutrientes que as crian\u00e7as precisam. A desnutri\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel por 45% de mortes infantis, e o milho \u00e9 um dos maiores contribuintes do mundo. Aqui, a popularidade do milho se torna um problema enorme. O que voc\u00ea faz quando alimentos mais nutritivos s\u00e3o muito mais caros ou dif\u00edceis de cultivar? Como voc\u00ea pede \u00e0s pessoas que desistam de centenas ou milhares de anos de cultura?<\/p>\n

Na Guatemala, decidimos que dever\u00edamos apenas melhorar o milho. Encontramos sementes de milho que naturalmente tinham mais ferro, zinco e prote\u00edna e as cruzamos com sementes que deram aos agricultores o rendimento e a resili\u00eancia clim\u00e1tica que eles mais desejam. Fizemos parcerias com empresas de sementes e cooperativas locais para levar essas sementes aos agricultores a pre\u00e7os que eles pudessem pagar. Em 2023, 24.000 agricultores usaram nossas sementes, nutrindo quase um milh\u00e3o de pessoas em um pa\u00eds com a quarta maior taxa de desnutri\u00e7\u00e3o cr\u00f4nica.<\/p>\n

Com o modelo funcionando, nossa meta \u00e9 chegar a 3 milh\u00f5es de agricultores, alimentando 100 milh\u00f5es de pessoas. O caminho para essa meta se abriu para n\u00f3s de forma massiva em dezembro de 2023, nos Emirados \u00c1rabes Unidos. Fomos selecionados como um dos 15 finalistas para o Pr\u00eamio Zayed de Sustentabilidade<\/a>. A cerim\u00f4nia foi realizada durante COP28<\/a>, e foi um golpe de sorte enorme que a confer\u00eancia clim\u00e1tica mais importante do mundo aconteceu nos Emirados \u00c1rabes Unidos naquele ano. Para a maioria de n\u00f3s, foi a primeira vez que fomos a uma COP, e a equipe do Prize nos ajudou a aproveitar ao m\u00e1ximo. Eles nos deram crach\u00e1s de pa\u00eds anfitri\u00e3o, que nos deixaram entrar em algumas das \u00e1reas e eventos mais exclusivos. Eles promoveram nosso trabalho incansavelmente. N\u00f3s nos encontramos com vencedores do Pr\u00eamio Nobel e diplomatas. Fomos convidados a ficar nos primeiros dias da COP, mas depois de um encontro casual, mudei meu voo para ficar durante todo o evento.<\/p>\n

A primeira abriu nosso caminho para a \u00c1frica. Uma ONG chamada Fundo de um acre<\/a> atende mais de 3 milh\u00f5es de produtores de milho l\u00e1. Eles s\u00e3o a maior e melhor organiza\u00e7\u00e3o em nosso espa\u00e7o. Assim como n\u00f3s, eles lutam para fazer com que os produtores de milho tenham uma dieta mais nutritiva, mas nunca tivemos a chance de conhecer todas as pessoas certas ao mesmo tempo. Na COP, todas as pessoas certas, trabalhando com sementes de milho, inova\u00e7\u00e3o e arrecada\u00e7\u00e3o de fundos, estavam todas l\u00e1 ao mesmo tempo.<\/p>\n

Rapidamente vimos o potencial de trabalhar juntos e come\u00e7amos a nos encontrar quase todos os dias. A combina\u00e7\u00e3o foi perfeita. O One Acre Fund est\u00e1 assumindo a lideran\u00e7a no desenvolvimento de novas sementes de milho na \u00c1frica Oriental e ajudando-as a chegar aos agricultores. Temos um m\u00e9todo testado e comprovado para pegar \u00f3timas sementes novas e torn\u00e1-las nutritivas.<\/p>\n

N\u00f3s esbo\u00e7amos um plano. Eles enviam suas melhores sementes novas para a Guatemala. N\u00f3s as tornamos nutritivas e as enviamos de volta.
