Biological agents add another dimension of crop care to growers — and another avenue of income to manufacturers and retailers. Recently, several big companies have acquired biological technology to pad their portfolios. Bayer CropScience<\/a> acquired BioNem, the biological assets and technology of AgroGreen, Ashdod, Israel, in March 2009. AgroGreen is a leading company in the bionematicides business, including the development and manufacture of BioNem (active ingredient Bacillus firmus<\/em>), used to reduce nematode populations and root infestations in the soil.<\/p>\n

In June, Syngenta<\/a> acquired Georgia, US-based Circle One Global, in order to add Afla-Guard technology to its product lineup. Afla-Guard is the first registered microbial antifungal crop protection product registered for use to reduce aflatoxin levels in corn and peanuts. Other large crop protection industry players — Arysta LifeScience <\/a>(Japan), Makhteshim Agan (Israel), and FMC (US), just to name a few — have collaborated with smaller biopesticide companies to develop their own biocontrols. DuPont signed an agreement in June 2007 to provide Marrone Bio Innovations<\/a> (MBI) with exclusive access to natural product discoveries for development as biopesticide products. The portfolio of product candidates — more than 20 deep sea microbes that they identified with pesticidal activity — was discovered by DuPont during screening of microorganisms through their collaboration with Spain’s Instituto Biomar, SA.<\/p>\n

Pam Marrone, founder and CEO of MBI, told FCI: “A rice herbicide, the first from this work, will be submitted to the EPA this year. [DuPont] licensed to us the candidates that were too complex to synthesize and better used for biopesticides.”  In April, BASF<\/a> signed a licensing, supply and distribution deal for California, US-based AgraQuest’s<\/a> Serenade biofungicide, which has received Annex I registration in the EU and is registered for use on hops, leafy vegetables, cucurbits, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and various fruits and nuts. Through the agreement, BASF gains rights to Serenade for foliar and drench applications in countries throughout Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America.<\/p>\n

“We consider the recent interest and investment of the big ag companies into biopesticides as a positive for the growers, biopesticide industry and AgraQuest,” said CEO Marcus Meadows-Smith. “Our business model is to supply our pipeline of new biopesticides to these big ag companies for distribution ex-NAFTA. As the demand for products in the Low Chem sector grows, we believe the big ag companies will find us an invaluable supply of novel and highly effective products for a long time into the future. We continuously screen biopesticides from other companies,” he added, “but we have very high internal efficacy hurdles that have to be met before we in-license or acquire products. Our insecticide, REQUIEM, did come from the acquisition of a Canadian company and we have recently signed agreements for a couple of other products that we will be announcing later this year.”<\/p>\n

Biotech acquisitions can be good for both the basics manufacturers that acquire them, and the biopesticide companies themselves. Acquisitions helped build what is now market-leading Valent BioSciences Corp.; <\/a>in January 2000, Sumitomo Chemical Co.<\/a> acquired the Ag Specialties Business of Abbott Laboratories, which is now Valent BioSciences. In May 2001, Valent acquired the Aventis Household Insecticide business, and in March of 2003, it acquired the worldwide Public Health business from Certis USA, as well as exclusive licensing rights to the use of Thuricide branded products for use in forestry insect control.
